The first book I am going to display is the 1974 VW BUGS book by Ed Radlauer. More will come later as I scan them. These kits consist of a film strip, a cassette tape, and 1 to 10 soft cover books and one hard cover book. Enjoy.

I have that book! My cover is a bit different though. It's that same car but not a drawing of it rather than the actual photograph.
I remember the day that I got it. It was one of the last days of 1st grade (1992) I was in the hall at the water fountain and my kindergarten teacher from the year before came up to me with that book. She said "The library is discarding a bunch of books and I saw this one and thought you'd like to have it."
That poor book is pretty tattered now but I still have it. I ran into her a couple of years ago and the first thing she asked was "Do you still like VWs?" She was surprised and I think a little touched that I still had that book 20 years later. _________________ All he needed was a wheel in his hand and four on the road.

I have similar stories too. My grandmother was a Librarian in Lexington, VA. When those little books were trashed, she grabbed them all up and gave them to me and my brother.
Since then I started collecting all of the car related Radlauer books. You can find 4 different versions of VW BUGS. The later hardback has the Bill Hines Chopped (forward dated)55 on the cover.

I just checked my copy and it's April 1973. The Baja jumping over the hill and the two buggy photos are in it but the others there are not.

Here's just a few from my collection of Radlauer Books, the hardcovers were usually library editions and the softcovers were usually used in the classroom. Nothing Kool like this in today's classrooms.

Not to get off track from the Radlauer Books but here's another one, Dune Buggies from Gary Gladstone. This one is "Hard to Find".
There are more photos in the Literature/ VW Ads of this book. |
