Thanks guys. I've powder coated a bunch more parts. All my brake parts are in MA. I have a friend who runs a shop and gets parts at a discount. Just have to get them here.
In the meantime I've been powder coating and getting it all ready. My adjust a struts came last week, as well as an alternator and the correct lugs. I'm going to powder coat the strut housing in silver vein, and the springs in orange. I'm enjoying having a car that isn't bone stock. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

So I've been doing some work here and there on the car. Monday I moved it from my friend's house to my own. He only lived 4 doors down, but having it closer has made me work on it a little more.
Thursday I pulled the smelly molded old carpet and tar boards out. I read on here last week that it's better to do it on a cold day, they come up better. I've taken a bunch out, but had usually heated them. Well, on Thursday it was cold, in the 30s, and snowing on and off. They came up pretty easy. Who knew? You learn something new everyday.
Looked a little scary at 1st. I poked the bottom a lot with a screwdriver before I bought it.
After a minute or two with a wire wheel they cleaned up. There are a few small holes I'll patch, but overall not bad at all.
Going to Masterseries them like I did my wife's Thing.
I really like the way they look.
I moved on to the rear axle. This is what it looked like. The threads on the stub axle were also damaged.
I pulled the stub axle, and the axle and cv joints.
Cleaned up the threads and put the stub axle back it. Also put some phosphoric acid on the trailing arm and spring plate.
The surface rust is looking better. The trailing arms are either getting painted or powder coated. I haven't decided yet.
By this point I was freezing. I sat in the car for a minute to figure out what to do next. As I looked down it hit me. That's not a 71 speedo. (Sorry, older pic, I didn't take a before pic)
Well, luckily the car came with a whole box of them. So, I put one in it. Even got all the lights working on this one. (Only about half of them worked on the old one)
So anyway, it's coming along, albeit slowly. I finally had all my brake parts shipped from MA. My original plan was to build an 1800 for it, but I managed to score a counter weighted 69mm crank, a 100 cam, 041 heads, and 87mm pistons. I'm seriously considering just building a nice 1641 for it. Hopefully on Sunday before I stop for the Super Bowl, I'll have some more pics to post and some more progress. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Well, I took the axle apart today. It's toast.
CV joint is bad. Giant gouges in it.
I blasted the axle and it's so pitted I didn't even try and powder coat it.
So I went to my basement and dug into my stash. Pulled out 2 axles, disassembled, cleaned, and inspected them. They were in much better shape. Blasted the axle and powder coated it orange. Need some contrasting colors under the car. Figured it would go nice with the silver vein backing plate.
Then I moved on to other things.
Powder coated the breast plate, coil bracket, and ebrake hardware. I know you'll never see it. But, it'll look good anyway. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Worked on the Super a little yesterday. Got the second axle powder coated.
Got a few other parts powder coated, and blasted some of the parts to get my wife's Thing done too.

Did some powder coating after work tonight.
The driver's side TS housing:
The VW badge off the hood:
On the car. Ignore the ugly hood, it's going in the trash:
The pedals:
Did some engine tin too. I'll have to lay it all out and look it over, but I think the engine tin is finally all done.
Finally feeling like it's going to be driving sooner then later. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

I love the look of the silver vein. It looks hammered. This is going to be a very cool car. Do you have a build thread for your '67?
On a side note, just because the heater channels look good on the inside, it doesn't mean they are good on the outside. Mine look pristine from the inside of the car, but once I pulled back the factory undercoating in the front wheelwells I found they are rotted on the outside.

Yes, I checked there. There area few small spots on this car that need to be fixed, but nothing like my 67. There is a build thread for it in my signature. Unfortunately, I uploaded all the pics on the 1st 15 or so pages to Webshots, which has shut down.
This car so far, has only needed mechanical work, and very minor body work. Providing I can come up with the money, I'll be taking this car to a show or two and on some cruises this season. (Not showing it though) The 67 is a very long term project, and I wanted a Bug to drive in the meantime.
I ordered a set of 87mm rings. I have a good bottom end AK case and 2 good dual port stock heads. I'm going to put it together, and save up to build an 1835 on the bare AH case I have. With that plan, and some luck, it'll run soon. Still a while from being a driver, I have to come up with a few hundred more dollars for things like tires.
Tin is almost done. Still have to do the alternator pulley and oil filler. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Made some progress on my battle with the ugliness under the car today:
Followed by some Masterseries:
Just got the 1st coat on. Going to do the whole bottom of the car.
The bearing seal retainer that isn't painted is getting powder coated, although I haven't yet picked what color. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

How much does the powder coating set you back? and what are you using for the powder coating?
Cool build. _________________ My 1975 Beetle Build Updated 8-21-12

Awesome job so far. How are you doing the powder coating? Is that the gun and powder you can get from harbor freight tools?
What do I need to powder coat like that? Looks amazing! |

Cool build. |
Powder coating is fairly cheap. I'm using an eastwood hotcoat gun, and an old used oven I got for free. The orange was the cheaper of the 2. The silver vein is a 2 part, silver vein base, and clear on top. I bought 2 pounds of orange, and 8oz of silver vein. So far I'm less then $40 in on the powder coating. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Just getting over the flu so haven't got much done on the Bug in a week or so.
Did manage to score this dirt cheap today though.
I'll have to cut a hole for the wiper switch, otherwise it's perfect. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Got some powder coating done today.
Close up of the silver vein.
A friend gave me a set of tbars. Powder coated them silver vein.
Installed them, and the new hood my friend John brought me from Massachusetts this weekend.

Great Job! You set the bar high for those of us working on our cars. Hopefully this summer I can kick things into a larger gear on getting the car done. |
