Well, how wrong can you go for $500?
That's why we let this one come home.

I never did buy that 72. Don't have the room for it, and can't get rid of the 71 after all the work I've done.
Speaking of that, after about a 6 month break, I actually worked on it today.
The passenger side and spare tire well are next. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

I think it was a really good purchase. You're making really good progress as well......way to go. I have a real soft spot for Super's.....especially orange Super's. Keep up the good work and the updates! |

Well, as promised, I worked on the Super again this weekend.
Now to grind the welds down and get the spare well in. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Thank you. Can't take all the credit though. I'd never have gotten through that quarter panel without help from my friend Chad. He made it look easy. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Forgot to post it, but I worked on the Super last weekend
Going to take some work to get it lined up before I weld it in. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Finally an update. It's been a long time since I worked on the car. Back in May I went to the Bug Out and bought a new spare well. Wasn't happy with the other one. Today I started installing it. Cut it in half to make it fit. Then lined up it, the apron, the hood, and fenders before I started welding. Got about half welded. Hopefully I'll finish it next weekend. Then I can move on to cleaning and grinding all the welds from previous repairs.

swiftcomb,
That is looking great! If you ever do it again, I cut a couple of slits up the sides of the spare tire metal, so that the walls can collaspe into the center, then go back and tack them together. But, I like your way as well! I am placing that into the memory bank, for future use!
Awesome work! Have fun and wear good body protection! _________________ Jimbo

That's a great idea. I wish I had thought of that. Oh well. Live and learn. Thanks for the tip. If I ever replace one again, that'll be how I do it. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Worked on the Super today.
Welded the spare well back into one piece. My welds will need a lot of grinding. Then I found some rust I hadn’t noticed in the 5 years I’ve owned the car. The metal the hinge bracket is welded to on the drivers side was rotten. Cut it out and started fabing the piece before I ran out of time.

Looking good - it's always fun to tell people you welded the bottom 6" of car back together. Keep it up!
Also, not sure if it helps now that the front is in, but it might be a good idea to hook up the trunk latch hardware and make sure that it latches and sets nicely now. If you need to make any further changes to the apron or hood, you can at least do them before you paint everything. Ask me how I know |
That does help. Apron isn’t on yet, and I planned on doing exactly that before I do weld it on. Also going to shave the handle so I’ll have some added work. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Like what this project needed was added work! LMAO
This is one lucky bug I can tell you that. The pan and running gear are amazing can't believe all the powder coating. _________________ 1966 Sportsmobile Camper https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0

Thank you guys. Hoping to get back at it this weekend. Went on vacation last weekend. Hope to get the hinge pillar sorted and the apron welded on. Also have a new rear apron to put on it at some point (current one is full of bondo). _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980
