I've been wondering about camping in my 67 bug. Remove passenger seat, and rear seat bottom. Cut plywood to take place of rear seat cushion. Make platform to make passenger seat area same elevation as back seat plywood. I could stretch out on such an area in my sleeping bag. Of course you'd need to cover platform w/ some foam padding. Stretch tarp off of my top luggage rack for noonday sun. Here I come southern Utah!

I find sleeping is a car, any car, painful.
Buy a good tent, sleeping pad, sleeping bag, and a light.
Bring warm clothing, and someone to sleep with, and you're all set.
I've camped a lot, and good equipment makes all the difference.

Buy yourself a Jer-Dandy roof rack and sleep on it...Lol
But in all seriousness I bought an original set of Volmac seat recliners for this very reason. Its not the Holiday Inn but my bus isnt on the road yet so this will have to do.

My Carback roof tent. We had this at highway speed and it was surprisingly stable.
