It is the flexible tube which the clutch cable runs through, as it exits the conduit from the front/ chasis and connects to the transaxle.

it keeps tension on the cable. if not adjusted with the right amount of " bend" to it the clutch/ trans will " judder" on take off in first or reverse

there are several threads in relation to it going on in a couple of the forums

can they go bad?? would they cause the clutch to slip? thanks for any help in advance.

Same principal as the bicycle brake cable which is named after Bowden the inventor.

slipping clutch is most likely caused by

oil on the disc/ flywheel due to bad main seal
weak pressure plate
over adjusted clutch causing pressure plate not to disengage disc fully

an oddity that will give similar symptoms is a " spun" rear brake drum...
when big nut holding the drum on is loose over a period of time the splines in the drum get worn out by the hard steel of the stub axle....

but as I said that is not that common.
