I might have the opportunity to aquire an all complete orig running 49 vw eng. I don't really have an idea of what it might be worth. It would be in trade for some 40's chevy parts that I have. The parts are worth $4000.00 My question is, would this motor be worth that much, as the person only wants to trade for what I have. I have not seen the motor yet but it is suppose to be all correct 49 parts and running. Any opinions appreciated. |

I withhold judgement until the engine is seen and the definition of "running" is ascertained. Will you be able to post pics here?
Without those details, I'd say you are looking at a $1k-$9k range.

There aren't too many 1949 only parts that would be easily discernible other than things with date codes (the block, distributor and generator immediately come to mind) and the fan housing with a mesh covering on the fan opening and possibly a winter/summer lever. There are distinct pre November 25hp parts, things like two piece tins on the heads and the air cleaner are pretty much it. Other wise it's just another 25hp engine.
Pictures of it would be your best chance for getting help. |
