Briefly in Ireland...

We've been seeing a lot of T6 high roof campers, but the only air-cooled we have seen so far is this 1974 bug at a VW dealership in Waterford.

I wish we had "The Toaster" with us here, but alas, we're driving a rental car around.

Sure, there are a few major highways, but more often than not, you find yourself on what you might consider a 2 lane "highway", narrow and two-way, and also often on "roads", still two-way, but narrow enough for only one car, with walls of green and/or stone walls on each side.
Beautiful.

Below shows the types of T-6 campers that seem to be prevalent for folks using them for camping (picture on the way to the Dingle Peninsula). Often they have hard-top high roofs. Due to the amount of rain in Ireland, I feel that pop-tops aren't as desirable.

That white thing is a T5.1 (first gen. T5). The T6 is basically the same body but the second major overhaul of the T5.

Today the T7 was launched. It is not a transporter anymore. It is based on the MQB passenger car platform.

Thanks, mdege.
As I have a hard enough time with my limited knowledge of T1s, it's great to hear from someone who's living where these are actually seen and sold regularly.

Hi Guys! You're in Ireland!?! Awesome! Our family still has an old home in Midleton, Co. Cork (about 13 miles north and a little east of Cork). I used to go over there a lot, but it' been 7 or 8 years since I've gone. There are lots of VW enthusiasts there, just not daily driving their VWs much. Such a friendly and beautiful country!

Another odds and ends post to try to catch up...

First off:
Nor-Cal Bus Fest
August 15th, 2021 (Antioch, CA)

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

We attended, and I took something like 178 photos but I've had a hard time getting them up onto TheSamba. Many of the photos I took are now posted.

It was a great meet as always; relaxed, plenty of shade, tacos and shaved ice for sale and a great raffle.

For all the photos I (and a couple others) posted, you can follow this link:

NOW, back to random comments about VWs and our visit to Ireland..

BulliBill wrote:

Bill, let's win the lottery, then get our buses over there, and visit!

We had an amazing time in Ireland.
"In Ireland, 85.5% of adults are fully vaccinated" . . . and I learned that kids between 12 and 18 was at something like 70% vaccinated at the time we were there.

...but I'm going to avoid talking about Covid right now, instead I'll throw a few more random VW pictures from our trip on here.

I tried to take some of the types of (new) VWs that are used for commercial purposes...

...and some for leisure:

I'd never seen/heard of a "Moonraker" top before. It is also the only Vanagon we saw during the trip:

Encountered this nice bug for sale in Ireland while traveling between towns:

On our way home we transferred planes at JFK, and saw this wine bar in the terminal:

...and once we were back in The Bay Area of California, saw this nice oval-window bug on the 101 north, just south of SF proper:

Haven't been driving "The Toaster" much since we got back, but this past weekend our power was out for a day and a half in Richmond, CA, so Kathy and I hopped into her Ghia ("Shamrock Shake") and went to San Jose for a night.

Sunday we met up with a "local only" group of Ghia owners that is coordinated on Facebook. This was the second meeting, I believe ultimately 12 or 13 Ghias made it out to Faction Brewery on Alameda Island, CA. It was a good group of folks.

Our friend Dana met us there and brought his drone, that's how we got the nice aerial shot at the top of this post.

Here's a short fly-over video he made with the footage:

HOWEVER, to keep this relevant to split-buses, we passed this deluxe afterwards on our way back to Richmond:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

There are two meets/meet-ups on Sunday October 3rd, 2021 in the Bay Area.
Since one is free and is only split buses, we'll likely try to attend that (we'd make it to both if we could).

SOTO fall meet in Northern California
Sunday October 3rd, 2021
Split Buses only.
8am until 1pm at the:
Milagro Centre
6241 Fair Oaks Blvd., Carmichael, CA 95608
Free, and there are shops there for food and drink.
There's a request for no selling or swapping at the Milagro Centre.

The other meet on Sunday the 3rd of October is the:

2021 Nor Cal Vintage VW & Porsche Swap Meet
Sunday October 3rd, 2021
7am-2pm
Concord, California
Concord High School
Oct.3rd
$40 per spot/car/truck (take as much space as you want)
Coffee and donuts while supplies last

Finally posting about the SOTO Fall Meet 2021

SOTO (Society of Transporter Owners)
Fall Meet, Sunday, October 3rd, 2021
Milagro Centre - Carmichael, California

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

It takes longer than I expect to post up 125 photos.
I'd say I get them classified into the correct category maybe 90% of the time.

Not a whole lot to say except that Kathy and I had a great time, got to catch up with some folks, meet a few more, and see some great buses.
There were several that I hadn't personally seen before.

I'd say there were about 50 buses at this fall meet.

...relaxed, fun, and we got to meet up with a friend of ours who lives in Sacramento; he came out to see the buses and have lunch with us at the River City Brewing Company there at the Milagro Centre.

Here's the link to the entire set of photos...
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_search.php?...ts=summary

Oh; and Mike (of SOTO) gave Kathy and I a incredibly cool wooden VW bus collectible that a friend of his in Europe makes... you can't quite see it in the picture below, but here's a link to his work (on facebook):

In late September, prior to the big coastal oil spill down there, Kathy and I were in Huntington Beach, CA since my mom was having a knee replacement (at 84 years of age! Was a success.).
...here's a couple things we saw while near the pier:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

...and although I'm trying to keep this BUS related, there was another great meet of the NorCal Karmann Ghia Enthusiasts during the Fleet Week Airshow here in the San Francisco Bay Area (10/10/2021).
"The Toaster" was there as a friend of the club, and Kathy drove her '71 Ghia.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

A few Photos from that:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_search.php...ts=summary

OCTO is tomorrow (10/16/2021) in Long Beach, CA.
We thought we'd be down there caring for my mom and her new knee, but she is doing great, so regretfully we'll be missing it.

However, here in northern part of the state are two things happening:

October 16, 2021
Volkstoberfest
"Back to the Dealership"
Clovis, California

October 16, 2021
VW Enthusiasts Alameda Meet!
Alameda, California
(in conjunction with the East Bay Swap Meet Collector Cars and Parts Meet)

We've been wishy-washy about what to go to, and I think we're going to stay close to home and perhaps make it to Alameda in the morning.

Hope you're all out enjoying your buses!

There was a nice, modest amount of VWs (about 14) at the meet.
Although there were two other big meets happening in California on the same day (OCTO in Long Beach, and Volkstoberfest in Clovis), for us this was just an easy, close-by place for us to spend a beautiful Saturday.

I'd say that that we were the only split-bus, but this highly specialized, V-8, lowered, and lowered top, work of car art (with the engine in the center) was also a "split":

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I wish I had met its owner, but I guess we missed one another.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Not sure if this parts swap meet (primarily for older American cars and hot rods) happens once a month or not, but it was Al, of Alameda, who had arranged a spot for the VWs to be on display.

Mind you; there were plenty of amazing American cars at the swap meet (and a few foreign ones as well):

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The parts swap meet part was pretty big, but naturally not too many VW parts.
I sifted through a lot of tools looking for Hazets and/or original VW tool-roll wrenches.
Ended up buying some brick-a-brac anyway; a couple street signs for the garage.

Our friend who lives on Alameda made it out, and George who heads up the "Nor-Cal Karman Ghia Enthusiasts" group arrived at the tail-end of the meet, so we all went out for beer at Almanac Brewing Company which was steps away.

...It's finally raining here in California, and I guess the holidays are approaching.

If anyone's aware of California meets coming up, Holiday Toy Drives, and the like for Air-Cooled VWs, let us know!

Also looking for perhaps a Veteran's Day (Thursday, November 11th) 4-day road trip if the weather is OK; open to suggestions of places to go/meet-ups, etc. I'm toying with the idea of seeing Hoover Dam, if it is currently open for tours. Haven't been there in years.

Hope you're all out enjoying your VWs.

Typically you have to take off the special lug-nut that keeps the spare on the bracket ('67 Westfalia Walk-through has the spare in the back left), then heave it out of the well so that you can turn it around and find the Valve Stem to check the pressure or add air.

How is this holding up? Does it leak down? What is the long threaded thing on the end? Is that for mounting it?

It's really great. Makes checking the spare, and adding air to it a breeze.
Take of the mustard vinyl cover...
Check pressure...
Fill if needed.

It's just a very long threaded end, I assume you are right; extra long on case you want to mount it.

The red plastic label zip-tie tab I added just has a note to myself of what the max psi is for when I am checking it.

As to leaking... hard to say... this old tire has always leaked on its own a bit, but I am not under the impression that the extender has exacerbated that.
Actually, it is one of the reasons I added it, since before any long trip I was tired of hauling the tire out just to see where the pressure was at.

Thinking of getting one for Kathy's Ghia spare as well.

Ah; OK. Challenge excepted.
I had meant to write up something around Christmas time about the things we have been up to, but there's been very little time between work and holidays and such.

I don't have anything important to write about (when do I ever?), but we have been doing plenty, and VWs are always on my mind...

Let's start with mid-December.
Right before some much needed heavy rainfall in the Bay Area of California, Kathy and I captured an amazing sunset while driving around the coast.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Then Christmas time and the holidays were coming up quick.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

We had plans to be in New York, where my sister-in-law lives, for Christmas.
As you all know, I am certain, omicron was increasing everywhere, and 1 in 9 Manhattanites got it.
Yep; my sister-in-law was one of nine.
She was fully vaccinated, and boosted, as well as careful.
Overall, for her, it wasn't too severe. Naturally we were very concerned until it was obvious that she was recovering just fine, although she would naturally rather have not caught it at all.
It did cancel our New York visit, however.
We made that decision the weekend of another NorCal Karmann Ghia Enthusiasts meet-up, this time at the Blackhawk Museum in Danville, California.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

George, the primary organizer of the group, even allowed The Toaster to participate; I guess you can say it's the unofficial support vehicle (with cheese, coffee and sparkling wine at the ready).

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Kathy's 1971; "Shamrock Shake"

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Our good friend Dana made it out again; he brought his drone to take some photos.
When we told him that we had to cancel our visit to NY, he said; "well, you should join me and Johanna in Baja Mexico; Los Barriles (halfway between La Paz and Cabo San Lucas)."

Can you guess what we decided?

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Johanna joked that I had taken more pictures of VWs while there then anything else...

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

...she may have been right.

Truth is, however, there were plenty of other great things about the trip, not the least of which was the beach steps out the back of our AirBnB rental house:

Kathy:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

...This Mexican fondue (made tableside) was naturally worth documenting too:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Had a fantastic time while down there. There's a few more pictures, and a few more VWs in my photos if you take a look.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

This brings us about up to date, except that we decided to skip Buses by the Bridge (although we would have loved to have gone); waiting for omicron to die down a bit.

We WILL make it to OCTO in Long Beach on the 5th of February...
...and I just made a motel reservation in Solvang for the weekend of "Meet in the Middle" which is held Sunday, March 27, 2022 in a park about 7 miles south of the town.

I don't know if any of you Westfalia owners out there have been buying any parts from https://nlavw.com/ [No Longer Available VW Parts - in England], but they have been making a lot of original quality parts that haven't been available for years. I've just put in another order for some things for "The Toaster".

Let's say you wanted/needed a SO-42 big table for your bus. You can perhaps buy a used one from TheSamba classified in mediocre shape for between $125 and $500... or you can get a brand new one from https://nlavw.com/ for £124.96 ($169.48 ).
Exact duplicate brand new table leg for it? Yep; they've got those too.
Naturally there's a chunk of a shipping cost, but larger orders arrive in roughly 5 days (after being shipped).

In the past I have bought rubber trim from them as well as the oft-missing rear-window curtain rails.

Don't get me wrong; I respect and understand wanting/needing and attempting to keep everything off-the-factory-floor original, but I'm just so happy that a lot of things we could only hope to find used are being made again.

OK; anything else? Oh; yes. I felt it was time for new tires. The last four were from April of 2016.
My local Les Schwab was able to track down 4 of the type we got last time [Hankook 185R-14 RA18], which we have been happy enough with.
I like getting them through Les Schwab due to their guarantees, free balancing for the life of the tires, etc.

I think somewhere in a thread someone had asked if this tire fits in the rear spare wheel-well, and until now I never bothered to try.
The answer is yes; just fine. My spare is now one of the old tires and NOT the 30-year old+ spare I had in there which deflated its self often.

Hope everyone is having a great winter and that we may see some of you at OCTO on Saturday Feb. 5th in Long Beach!

Got two quick things done on The Toaster.
1) Trying out a new Spice Rack from https://nlavw.com/
2) Put in a new SO-42 Folding Dining Table, also from nlavw

Wrote a full post about the table here:
Repro SO-42 Folding Dining Table from nlavw.com Thought & Advice

...as to my original Spice Rack, well, I have repaired it a few times in its life, and recently it was damaged.
Since I was already getting a variety of parts from nlavw in England, I decided to try their Spice Rack.

It's really well built:

The only major, very noticeable difference (to me) is the piano hinge.
It isn't quite as eloquent as the original:

Overall though, I am super pleased with the new Spice Rack.
I used some sealing wood stain to try to match the non-laminated parts to the age of the original a bit.

The other thing I did was print the pattern of the SO-42 table tops onto some card stock paper, and placed it down as a non-permanent slight protection for the wood against scuffing from all the junk I keep on the door.

Hope to see you there! Say hello if you make it, and show us your bus!

Bad news/Good news.

The bad news is actually good news in some ways...
I was getting the Toaster ready for the 8 to 10 hour drive to Southern California and found that the brakes were pulling severely to the left.

Didn't feel like just an adjustment problem, because this came on kind of suddenly instead of over time. A week ago, the brakes were fine.

Looks like we've got a leak in a wheel brake cylinder.

The other "bad news" is that we don't have time to get the parts/fix it prior to getting down to Orange County since we need/want to be there for my mom's 85th birthday tomorrow, and both Kathy and I have to work all day today.

The "good news"?
We found the problem before risking our lives on the freeway.
Although we won't have The Toaster with us, we can now sleep in on Saturday and STILL make it to OCTO.

Naturally saddened, however, that we can't drive the bus down.

OCTO
Sat., Feb 5th, 2022 in Long Beach, California

It was a beautiful sunny day last Saturday, and although we couldn't bring the Toaster along, I'm glad we made it out.

By not having showed up at 6am, and not staying all day, I did miss the chance to really talk to anyone at length, or even take as many pictures as I typically do.

It was wonderful, however, to make it to the meet with my family.

Left to right that's our cousin Audra, Kathy, my brother Dayton, my sister-in-law Anastasia, myself and my mom in the wheelchair.

Mom just had her 85th birthday this past week.
Her new knee (full replacement) that she got at the end of last year is doing great, but we pushed her around because she's not doing a lot (time-wise) of walking again yet.

There was, naturally, plenty to see:

There's more pictures from myself and others here:

I would have loved to stay longer, but with mom in-tow, we kept our visit uncharacteristically short to the meet.

A stand-out moment (for me) was to see this ladder truck in action:

Lots of beautiful campers at the meet too.

I didn't get get to see this hinge in action but I like the inventiveness of what someone did with the top of their SO-42 Cold Box unit:

There's plenty to do on "The Toaster" right now; the brakes should be functional again by this weekend.

On Sunday the 20th is another NorCal Karmann Ghia Enthusiasts meet and cruise, starting with coffee and ending up at a winery.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2022 AT 9 AM
Ghias Cruise and Bocce
Niles Cafe

For February, we will meet at 'The Nile Cafe' in Old Charlie Chaplin Town Niles Canyon in Fremont, then cruise along Sunol Highway 84 and our final destination is at 'Da Boccery' or Ruby Hill Winery in Pleasanton.

George, the primary organizer of the NorCal Karmann Ghia Enthusiasts, naturally MOST enjoys Ghias and making sure that all the Ghias are lined up (for photo ops, the cruise, etc.). I can't imagine however, that other air cooled VWs, wouldn't also be welcome as long as the Ghias remain "grouped", so if you're itching to go on a drive with friendly VW folks, come on out with your bus.
Likely we will also have The Toaster there with us.

Hope to see any and all of you wonderful split bus folks at meets and/or on the road!

Yet more odds and ends...

Let's see... We made it to our local Ghia club's meet on February 20th...

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Regretfully Kathy's Ghia "Shamrock Shake" was not in attendance.
Her engine had a push rod that slipped out and damaged a head.
To be honest, I really don't like the engine that came with Kathy's Ghia.
It's a souped-up, pretty quick 1903(?!?) CC engine.
Likely it was some previous owner's wet dream, but between not knowing how well or badly it was built, the dual Kadron carbs, J-tubes (we'd prefer heater boxes), over-working electric fuel pump and the permanently glued in(?) oil drain plate, I really don't like it.

We hired our local shop [523 Rods] to replace the bad head.
Naturally that was a pretty-penny, and I have even been considering/researching buying a newly manufactured single carb 1776 turn-key engine to install into it, but any place building or refurbishing engines seems to be 6 months-out nowadays.
Therefore we spent for an expensive band-aid (the new head) giving me time to further contemplate getting something I'd prefer into Kathy's Ghia for simplicity's sake (plus I really don't have that kind of money laying around).

What does this have to do with Split-Buses, DadaCheese?
Oh; sorry, not much except that I do enjoy going to the Ghia meets with "The Toaster."
Well, that, and if anyone know a reputable and not insanely expensive long blocks or TurnKey 1776 engines out there that are freshly built/rebuilt, let me know.

TIKI.
Thanks to our friends who live on Alameda Island here in the Bay Area of California, Kathy and I seem to make it out for Tiki drinks every once in awhile.

Last weekend was not an exception, in fact, we were in Sacramento on Saturday where we went to the "The Jungle Bird" for the first time, and then on Sunday, we ended up at "The Forbidden Island" on Alameda for our friend's birthday. George, of the NorCal Ghia group met up with all of us there.
The picture of George's Ghia and the Toaster is in front of Forbidden Island.

While in Sacramento last Saturday, I took photos of VW junk:

Oh, and while in Portland, Oregon for a wedding last month, we went to neighboring Camas, Washington where we saw this 1975 Brazilian split Bus:

Enough odds and ends; that's about everything lately, except to say that we'll make it to the next NorCal Ghia Enthusiasts meet. (it's on the calendar under "Community" --> "Shows")
March 19, 2022 - Ghias and Food Trucks/Beach Cruise
Alameda, California

Other Air-cooled VWs are welcome as long as the Ghias get to park next to each other.

Later in March:

March 25, 2022 - March 27, 2022 - VVV Treffen Campout to Meet in the Middle
Ventura, California

Not sure which VW we will take to that; the Ghia's head needs to be broken in, and I am looking into having Kombi Haus (in Sacramento) replace the king pins on The Toaster.

Hope everyone is having a great winter and is out in their buses.
