|
|
I have done a search and found a couple of topics on this, however the pics are scattered all over the place. Thought it would be better to combine all the pics in one place.
So i have a carat model vanagon with with fiberglass bumper. There are no holes to mount, so it is up to me where I want to mount them. It seems that most put them over the lower grill just on the inside of the edge. I have seen a couple photos where they are mounted in the blank space between the edge of the grill and the side marker (this is where I am leaning to mount).
I am going to be buying the ROUND lights, either fog or driving, not quite sure yet. Still looking at brands as well. Hella, Cibie and so on.
Thanks fellow Sambanistas! |

Get one of those steel plates with mounting tabs to mount behind your license plate. _________________ 88 Westfalia Club Joker syncro AAZ i/c

Not on a fiberglass bumper, nor is it round with the rectangular headlights, but they are round driving lights. I had some simple mounting brackets made up to mount to the body beneath the bumper. There should be four sets of holes in a triangular pattern designed specifically for mounting driving lights. I used the inner set of holes, though the outer sets should put the lights where you want them. I would also recommend mounting directly to the body to prevent the light beam from "bouncing" in front of you as the bumper flexes and vibrates while underway.

/Watching this thread.
I've been contemplating fog lights, but want to get my bumpers figured out first. Moare pics would be great! _________________ Don't tell fish stories where the people know you; but particularly, don't tell them where they know the fish.

I put these on a year ago. Drilled the hole next to the stiffening brace on the backside of the bumper (obvious with the bumper off). I used 1/4" thick dense rubber washers between the paint and the light bracket. They are very sturdy, even while driving down washboard roads. I have never had to readjust them.
The way I've got these Hella's adjusted, they do a good job filling in the area between the bumper and the reach of the low beams.
FWIW, I wired them to a 944 Porsche switch (off eBay), wired in series through a relay triggered by the ignition switch. I typically always leave them on for daytime running lights, and low beam enhancement.

Just a different way to mount .
I put these up high for off road use. Used a Yakima driving light mount, no holes just clamp on. The Yakima mount works great on a Thule basket. I know someday I'll run the wires through the Thule basket tubes. Had to go bigger or go home! And redo the wires to. _________________ 1987 syncro westy tin top sun roof , GW2.3, rear locker, decoupler, Gary Lee tire rack & winch mount, lift, south african grill, big brakes , rhein alloy ,15 BFG AT, Fiamma 10 foot awning ,140 watt rear 85 watt front solar , mppt, truckfridge, automatic fire extinguishing system, tencent oil cooler, And a RMW SS exhaust! - 1971 bug convertible 1776 engine- 2010 Subaru turbo - 1993 Toyota 4x4 truck - 1999 Harley 95 CI, big bore, Andrews cams . I see most people use the Hella 500 series but I am intrigued to see what the big-daddy 4000 series would look like on a T3?? |

discontinued Hella 155's driving lights and was considering mounting them up high on the face of the cargo/luggage area. Only one guy mounting high out of all these posts. Anything I should consider? I'll make a move on the SA grill and lights at a later date. I also picked up the wiring upgrade kit too for the stock bulbs. For now I just want a good flood light to light up prospective (unorganized) camping sites out in the woods of CO and elsewhere. _________________ 83.5 Westfalia with a "Left Laner" 2.2 Conversion |

Up high puts them closer to your eye line, vs down low at bumper. Closer to the eye level equals more light blowback in foul weather - precisely when many folks need/want more lighting. But for slow, searching activity as you describe, it may be perfect. Get fog beam pattern for lots of lateral throw to search with, vs two blobs of light with driving beam pattern that may not let you accomplish that as well.

Wasn't planning it, but did a bit of night time driving on logging roads this last weekend. I found that my centre aimed aux lights would have been more useful angled slightly outwards to each side. They're Japanese Cibies, 55W, nice light.

Just stumbled across this thread . . . . .
Nope, I don't drive with all lights on, but makes for a good photo. Cibié “Tango Plus” Driving and Fog Lights, with Hella Rectangular E4 conversion. _________________ '88 Bostig Westy |
