her owner is broke and needs money to fix her!

Just kidding....Razz (please send donations via email....)

maisy got a little jealous at me buying a new car to replace her, and she is acting up. i ran out of gas....or so i thought, wednesday morning. i put in 2 gallons, and she started up after a bit of cranking. i tried driving her up the hill, in first, and she bucked the whole way. she died a block up the hill, so i coasted right back into the parking space and took a different car. dad put 5 gallons in, and i have gas in it now, and she still wont talk to me.

i have tested for spark:
good, strong spark.

tested for fuel with both starting fluid, and wedging open the AFM and checking fuel pump runs....and that i am getting fuel on the fuel rail (6mm bolt) and i got fuel just fine, and it WILL run on starting fluid.

so its down to the injectors.

how do i test for proper power at the fuel injector? i skimmed throught the AFM flowchart, and just about fell asleep....

anyone got a possible simple solution before i get into all the testing? i want to make sure the double relay is working, but havent had a chance to do so yet.

i suspect the injectors stopped getting power, all 5, as it wont even cough without starting fluid.

and compression is great, about 120-135 or so last time i checked (very even, just dont remember numbers)

details on the engine in sig line, the 1978.

thought maybe clogged filter, but i am getting enough gas into the fuel rail, it would at least cough on me, and lack power and idle issues....so i kind of push that aside. ill test it thought if someone gave me a good solid reason to get drenched in gas putting in my spare fuel filter (thanks zelten)

Confused have you ever been inside one of those filters? it could have pushed all the shit into the injectors.... or you could have something blocking the outlet on the tank. or, you could have something else wrong.

chain of events says:

ran good

ran out of gas

runs like shit after running out of gas

just sayin'

Did you pull the plugs? Are they wet when this happens?
I will place my bet on two things.

1. Return FPR is clogged.
2. Fuel pressure is low.

Or, or are you running a CC? Clogged or clogging.

If you have $84 plus shipping you can send in your injectors ( http://witchhunter.com/ ) and have them cleaned and tested. It takes about 3 days. He's really close to you (Bothell) but don't drop them off personally. He's a busy guy and prefers them to be mailed. After that you will know if it's the injectors and continue to troubleshoot and know that you have good clean injectors.
If I were you Stuart, I would drop the engine, pull the tank and have a look. That bus was sitting for a long time before you bought it. Ensure that the tank is clean.
If you have spark and compression then you're missing something, fuel? You now have the luxuary of a second vehicle. No need to wear and tear on your baby. Use these dark winter months to ensure that "Maisy" has a great summer!

skills: point taken, ill swap it in a bit and test again.

busdaddy: yes, unless dads really messing with me (doubt it) cause he put the other 5 gallons in it...

PW: clogged FPR....ill take it out and brake clean it a bit and see what falls out. i did not pull the plugs yet, but i will do this in a bit after replacing the filter and cranking a bit to see if the filter solves it. if the filter doesnt solve it, ill check and see if they are wet from cranking. they are all new, plugs wires cap rotor ect....so its all suppossed to be in good shape anyways...but never hurts to check.

Zelten: i actually considered that, but i gotta pinch pennys for the next three paychecks, as i gotta pay for school again in january, and its gonna be close as far as paychecks go. but, that is HIGH on my list. very high. as far as the tank, it is pretty clean, and i have run about 20k on it, and have gone through 2 or 3 filters in that 20 k, so maybe you have a valid point. but, i have to get the jetta tabbed still, and pass emissions, which means i gotta fix the CEL and such, so i need this running in case i need to drive a different car. as soon as the jetta is tabbed, this baby may just be getting the care you speak of Very Happy

What's your fuel pressure reading?

Don't use starting fluid.

2x, just never a good idea.

Drain a quart or more of fuel out into a glass jar and see how much water is sitting in the bottom of the jar.

nope. never really ever read comics as a kid. still dont. unless you count capn underpants Very Happy

fuel filter swapped (my arms and eyes burn so bad....) and nothing changed. it poped for a sec, after i primed the pump by opening the flap to get the air out of the system, but i think that was residual starting fluid. old filter had plenty of breathabiliy in it. i blew through it just fine, not clogged.

tram: i realize its a risk, i dont have any spare gas on hand, but ill get some tomorrow to use as a sub of the ether. i use it sparingly.

what directly supplies power to the fuel injectors?

So whats the pole for now at this point? Be happy you have another car to drive and take your time fixing your bus.

Besides #2 & #3 are the same choice to me. I enjoy the bus all the more because I don't drive it all the time. More of a special treat. I drove a T3 as my main car from age 17 to 30. I stopped at 30 because my work skills collected to that point warranted me being a supervisor or management staff, and cars were given to us as perks Wink

Slow down champ, no need to run your bus into the ground while you are trying to get life started.

Check your fuel pressure, and look for a moderate sized vacuum leak. Check your various hoses, and S-boot.
