I am looking for something durable to paint suspension parts with. I was thinking of truck bed liner for the front and rear trailing arms. As for the front beam I was thinking of something a little more smooth and glossy. VHT makes a black epoxy rattle can that is supposed to hold up well to the environment. I also thought of rubberized undercoating, but being rubbery, it would probably scrape off easy, don't you think?
Any suggestions you guys have are welcome.
Thanks! _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

I use rust reformer, matte black. Works great and dries almost instantly. Plus touch ups are simple and blend right in. I have nerf bars, that have gotten eaten up and I think I will rhino line those. After a couple trips, the paint is gone, but for the cage and suspension, brakes, etc the rust reformer works good. |

Rustoleum Semi-Gloss Black... In rattle can.... Easy to touch up if it gets scratched or nicked...

Por-15 for chassis parts.
rustoleum rusty metal primer and paint for everything that can be unbolted and touched up.
There was a test done years back with all the fancy and not so fancy paints on sheets of metal. The guy just basically abused them over time and gave the results. He even left one in his pool.
Turned out that the most important part had nothing to do with the brand but rather the preparation of the metal before painting.
I was impressed with Rustoleums' performance compared to it's price. I think if you really use what ever it is hard enough, you will end up needing to repaint every couple years no matter what anyway. _________________ Brian H.

Like Dale said, Rustoleum rattle cans. Easy to touch up. I used gloss black on this one.
Only drawback is it can be slow to harden. _________________ Brian

Ditto for Rustoleum, but I brush it only to get a good coating everywhere. |

Oops. Forgot to mention. I brushed on Rustoleum anywhere on the pan where carpet goes. Rattle cans everywhere else. _________________ Brian

Do any stores shelve por15, or is it an order online only kind of deal?
How does por15 hold up compared to bed liner? |
Por 15 can be had at auto paint suppliers like Finish Masters (in Grand Rapids) or Wyricks(in Holland) although I think you're better off buying what you need online because most store do not carry much or all of their products.
There are several different Por15 formulas, most people just get the standard chassis black. But before you do that you gotta sand blast and then spray their Metal Ready product on the bare metal to etch and convert. I've tried with and without and there is a big difference in adhesion. The best part about Por15 is you brush it on thinking it's going to look wavy but after it cures (5hrs) it's glossy and smooth. I wish I had taken pictures now because just last weekend I did the bottom side of my gas tank.
I'm not sure how Por 15 holds up to foot traffic but I can say the parts on my rail I coated 7 years ago which have basically sat in a damp pole barn have not shown signs of deterioration at all. I think it also helps to spray a top coat on. Por 15 needs to be etched before you can top coat because it's so glossy.
I really hate things that are a hassle but I'm still using it. I keep a can in my fridge in the garage all the time. You have to be careful with it. I'm sure most people who didn't know to put two layers of plastic under the lid before resealing it have found it impossible to open the can. I did. It cures by moisture not evaporation so you got to keep it sealed as much as possible. _________________ Brian H.

And it's not UV stable. Needs topcoating if it's going to be exposed to the sun.
I use Duplicolor high build enamel. It's listed as a gloss black, but it's not a super high gloss black. It's tough as nails and self leveling, but tends to run if you do too heavy a coat. I usually use a Rustoleum rust preventive primer underneath. Dries super fast.
Like Orangecrusher said, prep is everything. I'm lucky in that I have a sandblaster that is large enough that I was able to put the entire front beam (sans spindles) in and blast it. If it's a part that I'm really worried about the paint chipping off (trailing arms), I'll use a self etching primer so that the primer has both a mechanical bond (sandblasted metal) and a chemical bond (acid etch primer). _________________ Vehicles:

Now if I was more equipped for spraying smaller parts on a regular basis with a HVLP, I'd use the Martin Senour Premium Commercial Coating.
Primer:

Paint:

Hardener
http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/CatalogItemDetai...0006419755
I used this system to paint the inside of my bug. There's a whole array of colors you can get (20-25, IIRC), and you can get the black paint and the primer in 1 and 5 gallon buckets. The paint is only available through NAPA.. Now this stuff is tough. Hard to scratch it, and the black is super glossy. If you can't get the info from your local NAPA, I can snag the info sheets and scan em in for ya.
I'll get some pics later. School firewall blocks photo sharing sites...

I just got into using the self-etching primers. I used one under the Rustoleum bed liner spray can I'm testing. It's funny, I expected to see something going on when I sprayed that primer on, but it just looks like any other primer. I do wonder if it's better to go with a medium coat with the first coat so that you get plenty of the etching chemicals or light like I do with other primers?
By the way the bed liner seems to be working good. I sprung a little leak on my gas tank vent tube that dribbled along the edge of the tank and when I wiped it up it didn't smoodge like I expected it to. _________________ Brian H.
