Anybody prep/paint the clamshell? While mines off I want to clean it up and thought about painting it silver or black but not sure what metal its made of or if its paintable.

Stupid idea? Im thick skinned.

i'd do it. i dont see how it could hurt. probably don't need to go too expensive on the paint either as it isnt very visible. Make sure its rust free, prime it real good and put on a topcoat in the time specified by the manufacturer.
i like to paint any metal surface that i can get my hands on as long as it is properly prepped and isnt supposed to conduct electricity.

Powder coating of that part has held up well for me.

I think mine is sprayed with an undercoating of some kind. Either that or it's covered with 24 years of road grime.

IIRC, they all were covered in cosmoline from the factory.
Many had the underside sprayed if the van had any undercoating done at the dealer.

I used Krylon "Fusion" paint. I didn't prep it much. It seems to stick to things a little better than normal paint. Rustoleum make a similar paint- "Universal". I use them for all my trim, mirrors etc.

We painted ours with an undercoating spray, and its looks good. Didnt do any real prep except wiping it down with a simple green cleaner. Its easy to paint

I made a skid plate to replace the clam shell and used POR 15. Looks great and should not rust.

I thought it was made out of galvanised steel? Mine had the random crystal pattern that galvanised sheet has. Anyway I painted mine with a tough black bed liner.

Beneath whatever undercoating that may or may not still be on there is a German version of galvanized steel. I have cut dozens with a plasma cutter to modify them to hous a larger spare tire.
Its amazing how after all these years the galvanize coating has held up very well.

Be sure to take your wheel out first . I've had numerous alloys with undercoating spots on them from the clam shell being painted with undercoating from the factory .
Actually very cool , All of my nicest alloys have been pulled from unused spares .

Mine has some chipped undercoating on the outside.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I think I would also paint the inside, mine full of road sand and crap.

<<I thought it was made out of galvanised steel? >>

Bingo--it is galvanized.

And without a coat of acid etch primer first, whatever you applied for a top coat won't be on there for too long.

I'm not so sure thats a good idea, whatever you paint on the inside will inevitably rub off and stick to the tire...

while roughly on the topic
how many place the spare tire outside facing down with the valve stem lined up with a hole for spare tire air pressure checking?

or should I ask, how many checkpressure in their spares?

I cut a piece of 3/4" plywood pad/base that fits inside the spare to use as a jack support for soft/unstable ground, a few felt strips to keep it in from rattling. Wink

I do this. I added a valve extender from the FLAPS so that it protrudes just enough through the hole to check it or to air it up without dropping the clamshell.

Great idea. I think I'll start storing mine there instead of under the bench seat.
