my driveway slopes down to the road at about 10-15deg. I am getting fuel in my oil when i park my 72 beetle on my driveway nose up the hill. And it is hard to start. If i park the car nose down the hill it does not leak in the oil and it starts great.

I opened the carb and blew out the inlet port, put another fuel check valve in the new EMPI carb and flushed the line before putting it back on the carb.. Gettting ready to startit up again...scared.

I'm assuming the fuel cut off valve is working because it is good nose down the hill.

You may also want to check the float height. If it is too high, it can also cause the symptoms that you describe.

I had that problem on my 67 mostly when it got below 15 degrees. The solution was to never fill the tank more than 1/2 full. In theory both the fuel pump and the float valve should stop it from happening but in reality they don't. One thing I was thinking may cause this in my bug was when it was so cold the choke may have stayed closed which may have caused the engine to suck raw gas right out of the over flow. But that was not it because the choke is below the over-flow! I changed everything Engine and carbs. Turned out to be something about the car and the gas tank! Not sure!

when the nose is pointed down hill there is not as much gravity feed in the fuel line going back to the engine, if any. When its up hill fuel wants to continue back to the fuel pump on its own. I would be looking at the fuel pump. If the diaphragm inside is old and cracked fuel will leak through to the underside and into the crank case. Do you have one of the cheapo pumps or a rebuild able one? If rebuild able you can take it apart and check the diaphragm. If not you can pull the pump and if there is NO grease on the underside and it's relatively clean it's probably leaking gas. The pumps get packed with grease when installed.

swap meet or someone's stash. There are some in the classifieds too. rebuild kits are like $30, Wolfsburg West and Bug City have the good ones with everything needed. I run the cheap Brosol one myself, $26 and hasn't failed yet. Just replaced it actually after 8 years running one with no problems. Replaced it because rust was forming around the inlet and I was having stuttering problems. The one thing to look at on the cheap ones is the retainer pin. On the cheap ones they are not held in place with a c-clip, the metal around the pin is just peened to hold it in place. 3 small strikes on each side. Others have said to do a better job than the factory and add a few more before installing, which I did with a hammer and small screwdriver. Been holding up for about 6 months now. Putting a nice rebuilt one on my new motor when the longblock is done.

Probably just flowing out of the bowl when parked nose up. See if the level of fuel in the bowl is too high.

I did a search for fuel pumps here on the Samba and got this: Fuel Pump You should be able to find what you want from one of the ad's. Looks like your going to have to figure out if you have a long or a short fuel pump push rod though! Has something to do with if your running an Alternator or a Generator. I can't remember I think the short one is 100mm?
