I just got my yellow 1971 Super out of the shop for about the tenth time, since I bought it on Ebay two years ago.

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=1003035

It was a mess when I got it. Four smashed fenders, a bad engine, badly in need of paint, brakes, tires, a functional radio, new windshield etc.. Possibly it looked beyond salvaging, though the fundamentals were there. I wish I had a picture of it the day I picked it up in California and drove it home.

Though it is not perfect even now, it runs good, gets lots of compliments and I enjoy driving it around the area. It is good enough to remind me of VW's I had new. It doesn't have to be perfect, or necessarily please all VW admirers.
There is a satisfaction, knowing one has preserved a very special old car, that can still provide reliable service.

So I'm ridiculously excited to detail this car. Its probably never been waxed since it was painted yellow. I know the paint isn't good and its chipping but hopefully this will give what paint I have left some protection and shine.

Too lazy to read through all 18 pages, but you'd be better off with a stock oil bath air cleaner, even though those chrome jobs are prettier.
Better filtering, better performance too.

I don't put this to a limit where I would need what the stock one would give me over the one I have.

So I finally got it all cleaned up.

I used:
Meguiars Gold Class Wash
Meguiars Clay Bar Kit
Meguiars Ultimate Polish
Meguiars Gold Class Carnuba Wax

Ended up looking way better and feeling way better than I expected. The paint is super smooth and way shinier now. I love it.

Decided to put my bumpers back on.

So today me and a friend sandblasted all the mounting brackets and wire wheeled all the hardware.

Then primed and painted.
Still have two brackets left and some of the hardware left to finish.

I always thought that putting the bumpers back on this car would really set it off. Looking forward to seeing what it looks like with them back on it.

Alright so heres the progress shots.

So heres where I ran into a problem. The notched springplates had already been notched from before, but It wasn't enough for it to clear.

So we took a bottle jack to push the assembly down and went under the spring plate. Worked flawlessly.

Just wrapped it nice and tight, then used fence wire to wrap and twist. Then trim.
