Well, I'll let you know how it goes for me. I'm not going to go the full wood route right now (though it is tempting), but I do plan on redoing the sagging laminated particle wood upper bed in solid hardwood like you've done in your weekender as well as rebuilding the tables in actual wood, too. _________________ -------

It really is amazing how much nicer, cozier, the wood made the interior feel. Like a small cabin in the woods vs being inside a car. |

Speaking of doing a wood-redo of the EVC:
Found that one for sale in the Richmond, VA craigslist: https://richmond.craigslist.org/cto/4733193692.html
Pretty awesome. _________________ -------

You didn't feel posting it once was enough?
My once every 8 years for 2 min contact with acetone probably isn't to worry about. But I'll keep in in mind 8 years from now when I do another one |
Sorry about the double mommy post. Minimal exposure indeed.
Love your work and this thread. I tow a 4000 pound boat with my EV on flatland, but always thought a TDI and 5 speed would be great in this car.
I'm at 80k miles with my VR6 and automatic, so that's a future project. _________________ .ssS! |

I thought some of you might be interested in a little update.
First off, I enjoyed building this van so much and helping other to build theirs that I have started to formalize this a bit. I'm going to build custom vans or do custom mods for those that would like one built. Probably just one at a time right now. Here is a link to a Facebook page I've been toying with. Let me know what you think.
https://www.facebook.com/Cavevans
I just talked to the owners of the black van. It's running great and they love it so much that it has been promoted to "daily driver" status. It was originally bought as an extra vehicle but they love it so much that they use it all the time.
I kinda nick named the van after the fact. Around here it has become the "Night Fury" (aka Toothless). Named after the dragon in "How to train your dragons". I figured since its all black and was originally built for my newborn daughter that the name fit pretty well. That and she is now in love with dragons.
The new family sent me a few pictures of their first trip to Moab in the van over Thanksgiving and gave me permission to share them.

Love it. I hate this soft touch stuff. What do you use to clean it off?

Yeah man, I'd be all about that. I'm in central Denver, so if you're around these parts at all during the week hit me up. A marg sounds great right about now (okay, well, not at 9:25 in the morning, but you get the idea). _________________ -------

Dude, excellent thread, and keep the VR6 info coming! I'll be going 12v myself, but still everything helps. Your style is awesome, I loved the GTI red stripe on the front grille, and it's great to see you sourced out a caring family to take over the old one.
I can't wait to see what you do with the blue one! VRT maybe?? _________________ 2011 VW GTi 6MT (The Daily)

Doing a hardtop to poptop conversion on a Eurovan in a couple of weeks for a guy.
Had to take the top to get painted to match his van.
Fits inside the Sprinter!!! Behind my second row of seats! This should give you an idea about the size difference.
It's tilted up to clear my tables up front.

Just finished the Blue MV to Weekender conversion.(not to be confused with my own blue van)
This van was a tintop 4 days ago!!
It's now a full custom Weekender with rear AC and auto climate control! No factory Weekender has those.
The top has fresh paint, 60" Yakima tracks, gas assist lift struts and H-bar to make lifting it with heavy loads easy, 3 window tent, silver carbon fiber bed/ceiling boards with matching factory Techno Blue metallic trim.
Other matching Techno blue metallic bits include the front seat bases, bed supports, table leg, curtain rods.
The carpeted floor was replaced with grey vinyl.
Transmission cooler and lift go on today!

18" Benz S550
people used to give them away on Ebay after they upgraded their S550's.
Hubcentric spacer, longer correct taper bolts and they bolt right up. Perfect backspacing to clear the sliding door.
