Not a 36, as far as I can tell, looks factory, one heater box connector is shorter than the other and has not been cut, no flange for the heater box clamps, it's the same width as a 36 or 40, what is it for?

thought it was 36 also, but the heater box connecting pipes don't reach the heater boxes on a 36 (tried it on a 36 with stock heater boxes that I just finished building). Cylinder head width is correct. The 36 mufflers I have seen seem to have much longer heater box connector pipes.

If it doesn't reach std 36hp heater boxes, then it is probably 40hp stale air. The J pipes on the 40hp ones are 2" longer than 36hp.

Looks like 40hp heat riser flanges in the full size 1st picture... also looks like someone cut all the bell-mouths off.

bell mouths were not cut off as the stale air engine doesn't use them. looks like the muffler was made that way, not hacked.

I believe you are incorrect. Pre 1958 36hp mufflers did not have the flares for the connection to the heater boxes, but did have for the tail pipes (except for the very earliest twin tailpipe mufflers~55 or so). All factory spec 40hp stale air mufflers had the flares.

The muffler you have pictured may not have had the flares cut off, but if you think about it, how is it supposed to clamp? I don't see any slots to make the original early flat clamps work.

Maybe the muffler shop is supposed to weld the thing on...

Really not trying to start a heated debate.

y'all are forgetting the major difference between a 36 and 40 hp muffler, the heat riser bolt pattern Wink
Not a clear shot posted but it looks like a 40 hp muffler

ok I guess I'm incorrect. That's why I asked for help. Yes, the pre-heat flange matches a stale air 40 muffler perfectly.
