I thought it would be fun to start a thread on the build of my 66 Bug. I am fairly new to the VW world, although I have been working professionaly as a mechanic for over 20 yrs. I have been lurking, reading and learning on the Samba for a year or so now. I finished "restoring" a 66 for my daughter a few months ago. It was a great learning process. Hopefully I learned some things to better the project on mine. I picked up this PROJECT car in Reno, NV and drug it home. My wife thinks I am crazy, but whats new. My plans are for lowering 4-5" front, 2-3" rear. Build a 2275 and have some fun. I am working on figuring out how to download pics. Hopefully it works.

Hello
It may be a 66 body but the four lug nuts on the wheels indicate to me a 68 or newer pan. Buyer beware. Hopefully you have a nice vehicle when completed.

The pan is the matching 66 pan (checked the VIN's before purchase thanks to Samba advise). The PO had swapped a 68 trans and front beam onto the pan. I guess he had some plan? I have already gone back to the wide five pattern. The 68 trans actually worked better for my build due to the longer axles. That way I can fit 17x7 BRM's in the fenders.

This is after the wheel/drum swap.

I was originally thinking of doing a tri-coat pearl white. Budget and my painting skills (pearl is very hard to make look right) have made me reconsider and I am planning on doing an Indigo blue (I know it is not correct for the year, sorry purists) with two tone tan interior.

Looks like you already had a plan, because you got a picture taped to the windshield. Laughing

Looks good.

The picture is suppose to be my inspiration while I am sanding and sanding and sanding. Did I mention how much I hate sanding.

Thanks for the pics. I don't think I can go that low. The roads here suck. But there is inspiration. Like most old projects I found some issues along the way. One of those being rust in the rear clip. The rear apron was also bent up pretty good. I am glad I invested in a welder. Parts are not as plentiful here as California so I welded in new pieces. Then filled the exhaust cutouts because I plan on running a sidewinder exhaust.

Thanks. I should probably backtrack my story a little. I actually picked this bug up I think in March/April. It had to sit until I got my daughter's bug done. You can kind of see it in the background of one of the pics (I'll have to post a couple of pics when I can get them loaded). Her car was the first full restoration I have attempted. I did all of the work on it including paint, bodywork and interior. Anyways I missed a few things when I purchased my bug. The first was that the prior owner (not actually the guy I bought the car from) really screwed some things up. I knew it had been in an accident on the drivers b pillar and had been repaired. It looked ok. Being a vw novice I didn't realize they welded in a 68 rear quarter and installed a 68 door. At least some of you already know this, but the striker area is totally different. Aaugh!. On a trip to Disneyland I stopped in CA and picked up a door and b pillar. That is actually the zebra door in pics. This last couple months I have actually been working on it. Mostly pounding sheet metal and sanding. I am no body man so if you see me doing some stupid stuff I am sorry. Embarassed

Looks like you've got better than average skills. Looking forward to pics of your progress. Maybe I'll pick up a tip or two for my build!

That is one of the reasons I decided to crreate this thread. I have learned alot on this site from others and hopefully I can give someone else some ideas. Here are a couple pics from my first build. I couldn't get the before pics to download, but it was in slightly better shape than my current project. I take no credit for the color choice. That was my daughter's, but I like it now that I am use to it. Have the day off today from work so hopefully I can get somewhere on my project.
