Hope you're still happy when it doesn't pass emissions testing.

Recyclers love the platinum.

I fed the trash can, there was not much left.

I have a new cat in the shop, but I was a few miles from home when it died so I just parked it at home.

Not worth the hassle of a AAA call.

I still have more than six months before the next test.

It will come out easy, I used some nice copper anti-sieze to assemble.

Over the last weeks I did sort of notice it was a bit gutless keeping up with traffic.

I knew there was a rattle in the system and I narrowed it down to the cat but let it be.

It has been more than a decade since I had a cat fail so I sort of forgot it can really choke off the engine when it breaks up.

It drives some what better now, but I still want a Frankenmotor.

Anne Frankenmotor?

The van should be running like a rocketship without any restrictions in the exhaust.

You do not live in So Cal.

I have had drivers of other Vanagons cut me off on the freeway.

Every traffic light is a rocket launch here.

Sane driving is planting your foot to the floor all the time.

I do NOT like to play that game.

I drove empty tonight up a hill I know it struggles with and, although better, i was still wishing for more pull.

You have wind a Suby up to get the most out of it and I dislike this way of driving.

My buddy has one leaking from a cracked block.

We understand from people who build Subies for off roading that the high stress placed on them makes them break the older they get.

So stomping on the go pedal constantly trying to push a big box is just asking to break the engine.

I want something I balanced, I inspected, I measured and I know is aa good as can be.

I have Mercedes engines still running great after many decades, so I know how to do it.

Bobby,

My cat was plugged up and failed.
I knocked the stone outa it.
Wow---
What was once a Fred Flintstone mobile, now realalizes what a power boost is supposed to be.
Keeping up with Joe-Q mad man outa the hole is a joke in any stock Vanagon anyway--
I roll, but not like the rest of the power hungry fools on the road.

I can cruise at 75 without any problems--and get there pretty quick.

I do not expect 421 Pontiac HP out of the rolling bread box---
But it was a Large, Big, Surprise improvement from what it was.

PS--
About 3 years gao Illinois dropped testing anything older than 96 anyway-- so this was a no fault deal for me.

I can't hardly believe you don't feel the Van running better.

TK,

Oh ya, it goes better, just not great.

Our Fly Yellow 1970 Single Cab with a 911S engine is great.

The 89 Blue Star with SVX is impressive.

But my EJ22 Multivan is not what I would refer to as a rocket.

The EJ22 on SoCal gas is much better than a WBX but not great.

I know your basic EJ25 is on par with the EJ22 for the most part, it is just a well built Frankenmotor has the low end the Vanagon needs and still pulls approaching red line. Gotta have!

I replced my cat this summer.
Pulled the old one.. which looked pretty well spent.
I bolted the old muffler back up to the j-pipe for giggles and went for drive.

Not much discernible change in punch off the line.. Did not seem to run better at all, truthfully. But the 02 was no longer plugged into the exhaust..sooo, was running rich, for sure..

I put the new cat in plugged the O2 back in.. Ran a lot better with some very modest/improved punch off the line.

No bench testing beyond my observations, but the "restriction" from the new generation CARB cat appears to be very little.

some folks I have heard will keep their new cat in a box, except on test week, and run the gutted one the rest of the year. They claim it saves wear and tear on the new cat.

So does anybody have any numbers to support that removing the cat allows greater power or mpg?
My thought is this: With a less restrictive exhaust the engine is more efficient.
A more efficient engine should use less fuel.
Although the tailpipe emissions would be higher at a given time with the cat removed, the increase in mpg may make for a less polluting engine over the span of a tank of gas.
The way I figure, a 2 mpg increase would be about 1.5 gallons of gas saved per tankful.Wouldnt 1.5 gallons of gas per tankful that never was burned be better?
What you think? Am I an idiot?

Gutted mine when I replaced the exhaust. Sure sounds better. But I live where there are no inspections of any kind.

If I were to flout federal law, I certainly would not be advertising the fact on a public forum, despite my contempt for many of the emissions devices forced upon the public.

But I also hate breathing exhaust fumes.

Blue Bay Bus Well first we have no inspections up here. Second when my cat went out last year and I had to gut it to get home. Came up I-17 to a hill I always have to hit 3rd gear, well to my amazement it went up in 4 gear. This is not scientific but it is cool! I love my dog I don't miss my cat! Very Happy These two drives were a few months apart, have new cat now. Wink

I have a new cat.

I am using a stock 2.1 Ernst muffler.

I can not say the van drives any better than when I did the conversion 2 years ago.

It drives well and better than it has in the last weeks, but a 2.2 is not what I consider great for pushing around a pop top van.

The EJ22 is MUCH better than the stock 2.1, but, at times, I am wanting.

On the freeway it goes good. Not a problem to go 90+ mph when I want.

BUT, the low end leaves me wanting, especially in traffic.

I still have to use sail boat mentality a little in heavy traffic.

Nothing is perfect, I guess.....
