1. Does the aux battery absolutely have to be relocated? |
Yes, the exhaust pipe goes through the battery tray. Even if you managed to reroute it you'd still have to remove the heater to get at the battery.

2. Is it possible to run ducting out of fridge and under seat without moving fridge parts? It that what the picture from German ebay is of. It looks like it goes from rectangle to round. |
The Westfalia style duct is a flexible tube that can be routed almost anywhere. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Great to know thank you. Is there a better alternative than under rear bench for the aux battery, and should I also relocate the dual battery relay as well? |

Sadly under the rear bench is really the only place to put the battery, even Westfalia did it on BN-4 equipped 74 campers. The relay can be anywhere, but shorter wire runs are always the better choice. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

ok last crazy question for now. I bought my bus without heater control boxes, and the heater boxes rotted long ago which i removed and just replaced with straight pipes. So the fan mounted to the ceiling in engine bay has no use. it just sits there and takes up space. Im thinking it might be possible to use power from the fan to power the heater? it all seems to make sense in my tiny little head that to turn the heater on then it would just be a matter of operating the lever by the steering wheel. Am I making sense, and is that a viable option?thanks again. |

Yes the red fan power wire and fuse is suitable for a gas heater. The heater has it's own relay but you'll need the fan relay to convert the signal from the heater lever into positive power since the heater lever is a switched ground. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Just running this through my head. So, the heater lever on the dash, when fully depressed, starts the snail fan above the engine in a non-BN4 bus.
So, if you remove the barely useful snail fan, you could use the same lever functionality to turn on the BN4 via a relay, instead of having a separate switch? Thus, moving the heat lever all the way down would turn on the BN4? _________________ Ben

Correct, I'm contemplating swapping out the heater levers in my 71 to the 72 style to do that exact thing, right now I have the duct booster and gas heater on the same switch and sometimes it's too much heat.
The only downside is you don't have the option to preheat the cabin while the bus is turned off and the key is out like the timer switch does. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Unless you re-wire to always-on power, rather than switched? _________________ Ben

Sure, as long as you don't get sidetracked and leave it on. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
