"Warning Graphic imagery, purist viewer discretion advised"
I recently bought a bus, the guy who sold it to me said it was a 58, I got a bill of sale but he never produced the title, he probably lost it. Its an out of state vehicle so it should not be in the California database and i should have no problem registering it and getting a new title on my name.
Chassis Vin # 227xxx
Front body # 223xxx
So while looking it up on the Vin# thread it lands in December 56?
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/chassisdating.php
I ordered the birth certificate and that puts it Built date as Jan 19 '57
So the question is, what year will DMV register this vehicle as? '56 or '57

Remember that those charts show the last VIN built during that month, so yours is January of 1957. |

Sure here we go:
We found the bus here on the Samba, good price, too good to be true actually so my brother Gabriel took a chance and drove to Oregon? to take a look at it. It was a good dry bus not too much rust and half the body work was already done, we could not pass on this.
Found it on a barn! Barnfound
Ready for a new home:
Arrived to its new California home:
So once here we did a closer inspection, we found it in pretty good shape for being an early bus, but It had its bulkhead cut so we would have to repair it, also notice the deluxe cargo doors on the passenger side, we will need to replace those with panel doors
The front floor will have to be patched or replaced as there is more rust than it seemed at first, I started cutting cancer right away!
And the body work is not all that great, there seems to be a lot of Bondo everywhere! there are a lot dings on flat panels visible on the inside but nice and smooth on the outside Not a good sign.
Nice and straight on the outside
Inside the garage Bruce my LAB/schnauzer mix greets the new bus
Got pressed Bumpers
Also Bought a front seat at a Pomona show first chance I got

So six months ago when I got this bus I had planned on sending it to the pros and let them do their magic to completely restore it back to factory conditions, everything except maybe suspensions and engine, but the last six months have been brutal for my business and I currently find myself with no money for professional restoration services.
So it seems, I will have to learn the art of auto restoration, I will have to learn to weld as I have never done it. Gabriel found a Mig welder at a VW show a couple of months ago so I've been at it.
Because my work wont be top notch as it will be a learning process, I have decided on doing some custom work on this bus, Purists, I know, dont beat me up too much.
I will tackle an easy welding job first, I like the european buses with semaphores so I found a some at VW show in irwindale, So the I will be patching the bullet lights on the front.
Ouch! thats ugly I know, I will get better
Next I will fit new metal to fix the front passenger floor
As I look around, Its going to be a lot of work to finish this car, the entire underside has a lot of surface rust I will have to get a sandblaster and some kind of rotisserie so I can work on those areas.
The Apron and the engine compartment will need some sandblasting also
I've been cleaning Nasty carpet glue off the cargo floors, its a painfully slow process, that stuff is tough!
Lots of work ahead of me thats for sure, luckily I have a helper, Bruce

you really should get a gas kit for that welder or get a welder with one already
flux core welding offen looks like that patch job and it is also easier to warp the metal with it _________________ '60 15 window walkthrough

I am no expert on buses but I've always felt the use of the "barn door" term has been misapplied and is now accepted as another meaning. Currently, the term as used on this site, means very early buses without the front windshield roof overhang and the large engine cover hatch.
If you think about it, real barn doors on a real barn, are two separate doors that hinge on the side and close in the middle, thus the name ought to be applied to all buses from 1949-1967 as shown in the factory certificate.
Don't want to hijack this thread but you brought up a good point as members of this site need a common vocabulary to communicate. Whether or not "barn door" originally meant the two side doors, on this site, at least, it has evolved to mean to a specific model of very early buses. My guess why, is that the very early buses with the double cargo doors were the first produced (duh) and had barn doors in the cargo area and the public and maybe even VW tagged the new looking vehicle with the "barn door" nickname. As the vehicle evolved and new models were added, the "barn door" nickname stayed with the original buses but was replaced by more specific model names for later models--even though they all had double doors in the cargo/passenger areas. |

yeah, everything I've been reading online tells me to stay away from fluxcore, luckily my welder already came with the gas kit, I just need a tank and Gas
I know where to buy a tank but i haven't figure where to get the gas, I pretty much buy everything online these days so not being able to order the gas on Amazon.com is throwing a wrench on my plans! |

Most welding supply places rent the tanks. They charge you a deposit when you get a full tank. _________________ New Vintage Specialist.

The front emblem was about 4" too low for some reason, So i patched the holes and uncovered the original ones up again
Started removing the doors for easy getting in and out of the vehicle, and to eventually clean, sandblast, repair and straighten them as they dont fit very well on the car right now.
I had to drill the screws out as they were locked, I will have to re-tap the treads before putting doors back on

Watch out with the sandblasting, it is easy to warp those flat panels and create even more headaches. I prefer chemical strippers and rust removers combined with sanding discs, causes less havoc. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!
