I agree. These cars were accident prone.

That was probably a combination of several factors.

They were all prototypes, running on real skinny 4.75 or 5.00 16 diagonal tires of dubious quality. Even if the tires were "new" they could have been stored hot for years and lost all rubber flexibility.

They were real fast and probably a lot of fun to drive. 35 hp for a 600 kg car was pretty hot back then.

The brakes were still cable operated, designed for a 100 km/h car and crappy enough for that.

The drivers were mostly Nazi coryphees (in the case of both crashes), per definition void of empathy for others that may be hurt in a crash.

I had to look up the definition of coryphee: leader of a group of dancers, but not the principal or lead of the company. I can see how a coryphee would not be especially sympathetic towards the injury of the principal: a chance to move up!

Als Koryphäe bezeichnet man ferner eine Person, die durch außergewöhnliche Leistungen hervortritt: eine Autorität, einen Experten, eine Kapazität, einen Sachkundigen für ein bestimmtes Fachgebiet

a person showing extraordinary performances, an authority, and expert, someone knowledgeable in a particular area.

To call somebody a coryphee in german absolutely means the top guy.

While looking up one of the drivers who was to drive one of the 3 Racers in the original Berlin-Rome race (Hans Klauser, who I actually met in the late 1970's Shocked Cool ) I came across this interesting article-
https://www.porscheroadandrace.com/porsche-type-64-a-star-is-born/

In the photo showing the rear of car #3 with the engine lid open, you can clearly see it does not have a single, center-mounted carburetor. Looking back in this thread, it's the same shot as the lower left at the bottom of page 1, with Mr. Mathe kneeling behind the car. Rather, it would most likely have a pair of small singles. Also note the tire sizes in the article.

Sorry to bring up those criminals, I shall improve myself.

I used the word because it is common in my language to describe the brown nosed sycophants of the inner who enabled mr. H. I guess it is used as a metaphor in Norwegian.

My point was just that Ley and Lafferenz could do just about what they pleased, since H was just a phone call away.

Call me a complete word nerd, but I'm going to check my copy of the Compact Oxford English Dictionary when I get home to see what it says. Laughing

Update: So as I understand it, yes, the "top guy" of the followers of the big cheese (i.e. Hitler). That is to say, the drivers were at the top of the pack of the SS.

This is a project going on in Holland I think.
The owner has posted here, maybe he can give us an update on the progress?

Yes, he owned and drove the car for MANY years.
He won races and was only able to use one arm!
