That about sums it up.
What about the american replica, it was supposedly not looking to be a true replica, more of a salt lake racer with a souped up 1100 cc 36 hp based engine, some seriously hefty speeds were expected! But then the project fell to the ground, does anyone have any updates? Has it been completed?
It would be exiting to see at what speed the rear wheels finally leaves the ground! |
There was a huge fight over insuring the car for an astronomical sum between the engine/chassis builders and the owner/builder of the body and the body was unbolted from the chassis and put in storage likely never to see the light of day. the chassis and motor went under a mid 70's Bug and set records at ECTA runway events last year.

What a wonderful photo. Off topic, but looks like a Kamm car in the background (at the very back between the two men). _________________ 1971 Alfa Romeo Giulia Super |

I agree! The only car I know of that had a Kamm-tail was the BMW 328, originally built in 1940. Here's a photo of a factory-built recreation. If you flip the photo around to get a similar perspective to the vintage photo, you can see the long C-pillar which both cars have in common. The left man would be blocking the very rear of the side window. In the vintage photo, the car does not have a slight kink/character line along the waist; you can see that the roof extends smoothly downward. On the BMW there is a recognizable kink. Vintage shot also implies a full-width rear window compared to the split of the BMW, but that could be due to the sun reflection and exact photo angle.
Would be exciting to think that these two future established brands were present at the same event. With Munich (BMW's HQ) being located close to the Austrian border, it is conceivable, though I don't know the history of the 328K. |

Thanks for the update, very sad it is not going to hit the tracks. I do not understand the reason for the insurance quarrel, a hand made body still has an estimable value, based on the amount of work put in and the materials. It is not worth any more just because it is a replica of a priceless vehicle. _________________ 1973 1303S w sunroof Click to view image

Here is another pic of the US race car project that became a road car.
As you can see, not detailed as the original, but still very nice built.

You are right sir! a proper hot rodder would be running 39 ford tail lights.

is there anyone. Who has ever seen where the exhaust is located and that maybe after all the stories. that 3 cars have been made. that this can be different. then everyone thinks. Mid Engine ??
the engine and chassis is very early. but with many wrong pieces. but this will be replaced. by another. more earlier. correct chassis and motor.dat is correct for this car
And the car of Otto Mathe has a wrong chassis probably of an oval beetle look at the front axle
the car of Barbach is also full replica on a chassis of mid 60 or something look at the rear attachment for shock absorbers
the prototype car is also a replica
so there is only one half original car with wrong engine (Porshe) gearbox (Porsche) and chassis (oval beetle) note they have recently replaced the engine to a time correct engine |
You maybe right about the first picture about it being a mid engine 🤔🤔 if that's correct it may have had a 1.5 liter engine and not the vw engine ether a different type of engine this would of been type 114 by what I seen info on this sight 👉 www.smcars.net/threads/porsche-typ114k2-1938.33964/ anybody got more info on the mid engine type 114 or type 64????? |

this one is not for Grundmann
this one is for a Belgian customer, the next one is for the Grundmann family
you can already see the nose on the buck of the Grundmann car in the photo
and the engine and chassis. will be periodically correct. for the specifications you have to ask Christian. he makes the chassis and motors etc for the 2 cars |

So, I thought it's time to revive this thread seeing that Mathé's car is being auctioned off next month it would be nice to put the spot-light on the mystery of the Type 64.
I’ve been reading this and other threads here on the Samba as well as other online sources and my books but I must admit I’m still confused about these three cars. I find this subject very confusing as most of the information available is inconsistent and often conflicting.
So this is what I have managed to decipher from all the photos available. At this point I just want to concentrate on the bodies, not getting into the chassis and engine variations.
Body 1,
colour: silver
front end: two air grilles
semaphores: short, mounted high
windscreens: flat glass
window wipers: single one mounted above the left glass pane.
window trim: thick chromed metal on all windows except on door windows
rear end: tail lights mounted high on tops of fenders painted body colour, license plate lights – 2 mounted on top of the body, license plate is flat on the body, brake light on top of the body located above the license plate, one reflector low on the left side not recessed into the body.
Comment: it appears the trim on the door windows was not yet finished/installed. This may explain the mismatched look of the windows on this car.
License plate(s): IIIA-0703
And here the same car in another photo shoot without the blackout covers on the headlights, tail lights, brake light and license plate lights.

Body 2,
colour: dark (black)
front end: one long grille
semaphores: longer than on car 1, mounted high
windscreens: glass curved at outer edges. Antenna mounted between the windscreens.
window wipers: two mounted above the glass panes.
window trim: thin body colour metal on all windows.
rear end: chromed tail lights mounted low on sides of fenders, license plate lights – none?, license plate is slightly recessed into the body, two thin brezel reflectors either side of the plate and one reflector low on the left side recessed into the body.
License plate(s): IIIA-0701
Here seen at the Porsche factory in Stuttgart
And at Gmünd, Austria after Porsche moved there taking many of his cars along including the Type 64 cars 2 and 3.
It was involved in an accident while in Austria.

Body 3,
colour: dark (black)
front end: two air grilles
semaphores: longer than on car 1 or 2, mounted lower.
windscreens: glass curved at outer edges
window wipers: two mounted above the glass panes.
window trim: thin body colour metal on all windows.
rear end: chromed tail lights mounted low on sides of fenders, license plate lights – none?, license plate is slightly recessed into the body, two thick brezel reflectors either side of the plate and one reflector low on the left side recessed into the body.
License plate(s): IIIA-0687, IIIA-0685
This is most probably the car that later became the Mathé car.
It was involved in an accident together with car VW38/16, the drivers being Robert Ley and Bodo Lafferentz who were having a street race.
