Bumping this to ask that you reply if you are planning to come over on Sept 16. I need to buy the burgers and dogs.
If you decide at the last minute you can make it but did not RSVP just come on over. We'll have plenty of food.
This should be a nice low key gathering for the afternoon.
Looking forward to seeing some folks again.

Almost certain I'll be there. I'm a vegetarian, for 44 years now, but will eat salads, desserts, etc. And putting that into print on a VW Samba board made me realize that was just before I bought my first VW van-- a well-rusted '66 Splitty from the environs of Boston. The van rusted to death about 7 years later. I've had 6 now, of different vintages, in the intervening decades, only occasionally with an overlap. (That's not counting a couple of parts vans.)
And a question: are you relying on only the VA?MD?DC thread, or have you emailed by pm to any of the owners in the region? If not, at least everyone who sees this thread should phone or email everyone they know well enough to have their email or phone no. The 15 or so I have written on a list are ones I culled by just flipping from page one of this thread down to page 18, here. IF the automatic Samba electronic thing that sends posting members notice of any future responses to a thread to which they have posted, then such a personal contact would not be needed. But I have not gotten such an alert on this thread for a long time. Anyhow, lets all try to get the word around. -Chris |

Chris, Yes, I am relying on this topic to get the word out the the local samba folks. If you would do a separate communication to those in the area that would be very much appreciated. _________________ Dave O

I just sent out the following as PMs to about 33 Samba metro area folks who have ever posted on this thread, in case wwe can draw back in some of those who don't look at the thread often:
RE: Vanagon gathering Saturday at Dave O'Bryan's in Brookville MD (street address below)
1) I'm sending this PM to you, and all the other VA/MD/DC Samba readers who have posted to this thread in the past, to help Dave O'Bryan get out the word about his Vanagon gathering this Saturday, Sept. 16. If you go to pages 20 (bottom) and 21 of that thread you'll get details. (See esp. the top of p 21, on the subject of contributing food to the event.) You'll note Dave has been asking those planning to come to post that on the thread or PM to him so he'll have a good idea of the crowd to expect. Our metro area has not done many get-togethers in recent years, so let's get a big gang of us out on Sat.-- at: 2120 Bordly Drive Brookeville, MD 20833
2) Maybe while there we can plan an overnight (or Fri and Sat night) camp-out before the winter sets in. One possibility: last year a few of us joined VW folks from the "Full Moon Bus Club" at the annual "Railroad Days" event in Brunswick MD, just east of Harper's Ferry-- about an hour 15 min from the beltway. The "Brunswick Family Campground" site is right along the C&O towpath for biking, and it's along the Potomac for those who canoe or kayak. Hiking is close, in the surrounding hills, some with river views from on high. It will be coming up in about 3 weeks, Oct 6-8. (For more on RR Days, you can google it, and the Full Moon bus club, as in quotation marks above.)
3) And to simplify communication in the VA/MD/DC area: to send this to you, I'm going through the 21 pages of the VA/MD/DC thread and sending separate PMs to get the word to all of you. At the Saturday event I'd like to have as many of us as like the idea (and those who can't make it, too, by email): to put their direct email address on a list-- to be shared but not used for any commercial purpose-- so we can get news of events like Dave's out to our metro vanfolks without doing it one PM at a time, as I'm doing now. If you want to be on the contact list, email me direct with your e-address. (Put in the subject line "VA/MD/DC van folks".) See you Saturday, I hope, Chris Hager aka pinetreeporsche, in Falls Church 703-409-4454
ps- if you know other van folks:I may not have names/Samba pm addresses of some of the region's van owners, so share with van-friends to be sure they've got the word. |

Hey- Chris Hager, from Falls Church, here-- I wanted to spread the word that I saw a very nice Rialta today, in Garrisonville, just N of Stafford- 40 min south of the beltway. 6-cyl, tranny re-done w/jumbo cooler. Everything works, very clean. -In Case you know anyone who might be interested. Sorry I don't have the ad link that I saw it on. If you call the lady (Beth, 571-228-3041), tell her you heard about it from Chris Hager, who saw it on Fri morning. She can give you the ad links, but I can say it's a peach! She wants $20k; might take a little less but has refused some re-sale sharks offers well below 20. |

AS LAST YEAR, but supposedly w/better weather- let's gather our Vanagons and other Westies right next to the fancy German Car show, the "Deutsche Marques Concours dElegance" in Vienna VA, just off I 66, 5 miles outside the beltway, next Sunday, the 6th by about 10 am. (see www.dmconcours.com/)
I wrote up several paragraphs of details last year-- go back two pages to 19, about halfway down. The important part is that we don't want to make enemies of the Elegance crowd, so we will use only the paved parking lot at the NE corner of the park-- Nottaway Park- again, see page 19. There's an unpaved access road going S off Courthouse Rd. that lets you onto the parking lot-- and also gives VW folks who come in non-vans a little overflow parking.
Note: Last year the field was saturated from 2 rainstorms, so cars were not allowed on the grass; the Concours judging was in the main parking lot down the paved road on the west side of the field. It's supposed to be sunny the 6th, but may have a little rain late in the week. If they move the concourse to the paved lot as they did last year (only time in 10 years) we'll take random spots in the overflow lot next to the main lot as before.
The DM Concourse is a fun event- a chance to see some fine cars, including a few rare models. And likely a few of the Elegant owners will come by and see what a real car should look like- a real utility vehicle that's also a home-away-from-home. So, get the directions I posted last year on page 19 and come on out! |
