This is a photo of a 68 door handle and wing. You can see that the wing is shorter but the handle is the same. I am checking on the part number now. Give me a few moments.

Wow, I couldn't see much size difference from the other pics, but it really jumps out when side by side! _________________ Eric - 1966 camper bus

Yes, it sure does. The L wing on the 68 handle is 12.5 mm from back to the tip of the L. Huge difference.
BarryL was spot on. You probably have 67 handles.
Also, I cannot find a part number on the L wing on the 68 latch, or my magnifying glass is not working.... _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein

BTW, I was thinking about a solution. Why not get new lock mechanisms that will work with the handle you have. They are more readily available including new, maybe. _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein

Correction: The K handle is a 67 and the J is a 68, right or left. I have no idea why the earlier handle has a later letter code. Hmm?

No lie! Side by side the difference is vast (by millimeter standards anyway)...
A friend of mine owns a body shop and has a box of old VW door handles. I'm heading out there this weekend.
I'll keep you posted.
Thanks everyone! |

This is not a part number, it's the key code for your bus. If you ever lose your keys, a locksmith can make you a new one using this number to look up the profile. _________________ Shawn

Good to know, I thought it would have been on the cylinder. _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein

Just switch the cam/hockey stick thingy for the longer ones if you can find a good pair. Grab a couple extras as they are all notoriously weak. |

BTW, why isn't anyone repopping these? I searched for them, new and used and they are just not available. _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein

68 handles are one year only and pretty hard to find so I would post them on the Bay window parts forum. _________________ RPM=(MPH*336* (R&P*4th*1.26))/Tire Diameter in inches |

Howdy all,
Just to shed a little more light (or maybe add to the confusion) here a few photos and descriptions of what I call "lock actuator pins" for the push-button style outer cab door handles from 1964 through 1967 Split-Bus and the 1968 only Bay Bus. Some folks (above) call 'em hockey sticks, etc. If I understand Bus door locks correctly (and I don't claim to, only Gabriel can call himself a lock expert), the 1964 through 1966 push button handles used a "T" series key, lock tumbler and "lock actuator pin" with a "T" key code stamped into the shaft (see photos). Notice how thick the base material is on this one, almost 4.1mm thick (see my illustration and measurements). Then for the 1967 model year the "1967-only" remote lock mechanism was modified, the "L" series double-sided keys and lock tumblers were introduced and the "lock actuator pin" had a thinner base (2.3mm thick), a thicker, taller and different shaped pin shaft with angled support casting and the "L" series key code was stamped into the pin shaft.
So far - so good?
Okay, in 1968 the doors changed a whole bunch, and now we have a new remote lock mechanism for these Bay-Bus doors, the keys and lock tumblers remained "L" series, but a new and considerably smaller lock actuator pin (shorter, thinner pin shaft with no key code stamped in) was needed for the new 1968 only remote lock mechanism.
Hopefully my photos and my crude illustration of the different dimensions of each of the three pins will help to shed a little light on the difference. Over all of these years, probably lots of folks have switched and swapped parts and some of us now have issues with unwittingly mix-matched parts.
So if I got it right, the left pin is 1964 through 1966, the middle one is 1967 only and the right one is 1968 only. Let me know if there are corrections. I hope this helps, bring on the corrections, and any further clarifications!
Now go talk amongst yourselves...
