i am thinking of selling my split screen bus, i had it professionally restored over 8 years by haywoods classic and custom to a very high standard. since dave finished it for me i haven't really driven it as between starting the restoration and finishing it i got married, had two children and have a dog.

as its not really being driven its essentially concourse standard ie its immaculate. my first question is how i should sell it, should i advertise it on somewhere like this or just send it to one of the auctions?

thanks for any advice

andy

Which would you rather do, deal with a number of potential buyers over an unknown time period and get a near market value, or not deal with buyers and get a random value?

There is a third option of selling it through a broker, and getting a few percent less than a near market value without having to deal with buyers.

Or the fourth option of not dealing with any buyers and never getting an insanely above market price. This one may require you to raise your price at various points years in the future if inflation and the market actually make it a worthwhile price at some point. It also has the added bonus of getting ridiculed in the whines topic.

Sell it on Bring a Trailer.
You don’t have to deal with lookey loos, dreamers or flakes.
It only cost $100 to list, buyer pays all the fees.
Usually it sells to someone far away so they just send a trailer to pick it up and wire you the money.
Buses sell for way more there than anywhere else on the internets.
You can set a reserve.
Down side is the process of listing is a bit onerous and it can literally take months before it appears, so if you are in a rush to sell it’s not the best venue.

Does BAT do auctions outside the USA?

Yes Lind- as far as I know. They do not have the same offerings international (pro photo) etc... and Braukuche is correct- it takes time to list with them, I have been trying to list my low mile Buick special for a month now.

Not a BAT fan but I agree. I'm debating listing an Impala on BAT, I know they want first swing before it's listed anywhere else... A friend said 6 weeks on his Manx but they had just sold one prior and they might have moved it up to keep the hype going. It worked well for him - I'll let him answer about the process but he's happy

I'm wondering do east coast and north buyers even look at cars during winter or am I better off waiting until spring?

With how long it takes for their auctions to go live, you might want to get it going now for hopes that it goes live in the spring. A friend of mine listed an oval window, and it took several months for it to go live. They do space them out so that auctions are not head to head competing with a similar model, which probably works against ovals since they are so damn common.

I bought my roofless Thing from Riverside CA in November of 2019 here on The Samba and had it enclosed shipped. A good deal is a good deal if someone wants it bad enough i guess.

You might consider Brendan at Holy Grail Garage.
His Samba username is buciobatisti.

He has buyers lined up, and can sell very quickly.

QFT. If I was selling a nice bus, I would talk to him first.

We definitely look in winter. It’s prime resto time, vs summer driving time

good to know - thanks

for anyone else into VW's 25-30 years like me and finally branching out to other classics - Big american cars are big big. While sure you may be able to fit 2 impalas in a normal 2 car garage, they are not VW's, they barely fit and for sure you can't work on them when both in the garage like you can with a VW. Don't make the mistake I did Laughing

FYI you will pay more like $2000 to ship coast to coast vs $1000 in “ normal times” either way, you can’t do it cheaper yourself, even at the 2k price point.

Haha, too late for me Erik G... I branched into a Buick Special because it was a very low mile car, and it looks really cool. Even as a two door, it takes more room to park than the split buses. For what its worth, I finally got assigned an auction specialist at BAT-
As for the original poster- there are pros and cons to listing your bus either way, and you have to decide if you want to deal with the potential buyers or hand it over to someone else. Auctions are like gambling, but the BAT buses have created a history of sale prices.

About 1400 from Bay Area CA to North Carolina for a heavy american car. Friend just sent it last week so that is current, all in broker and trucker. If you need a car moved, ask me, I have a good broker not the usual scam artist

cheers guys

being a bit busy, have got all the pics and what i spent and when Very Happy

i will check out the holy grail guy, i am in the uk but talking to a very knowledgeable owner he thought euro buyers would be interested as its left hand drive. surely a vw man o the west coast would be tricky if the van was in the uk?

ideally i just want a straight forward sale, will probably get round to doing something more proactive in the new year.

at the mo i just want to get a handle of what i should ask for it?

You can see what they are not selling for in the classifieds here.
