Every how many years should this wax spraying be done? |
If you drive in the salt I'd rinse the undercarriage every year and reapply. It will not hurt anything. |
I'd find a diy carwash with a bottom rinse or setup a garden hose with a sprinkler and park the Vanagon over it...then setup a concession stand for the ice rink you created! _________________ This free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

I feel the need to clean out all the cavities... I live on 1.5 miles gravel to the highway. Iowa limestone gravel. I don't often run Floss in the salt season, but I am sure I have a few times at great need. So, I am sure I have salt AND lime in my cavities. From Chemistry class, I seem to remember that a strong Base is as corrosive as a strong Acid.
Now I get the idea that this wand kit being shown in the Official guide needs to have a counterpart kit with cleaning wands. What to spray into the cavities first is my question... hot soapy water? How many #'s of pressure? Interior and cabin wall cards all out? Dash out? Sounds HUGE! _________________ '87 Westy 'Flossie','86 Westy 'R1','86 tintop GL - Subi2.2 'J2','83.5 stock tintop L 'ZoomBus','74 Karmann Ghia, '63 Notch |

Personally, I don't know if I'd turn to a car company for health advice. |

Ed use your imagination and whatever you have at hand to flush out the cavities, especially the frame members. This is not rocket science. Just get it done. If you remove the rear bumper mounts you have great access to the inside of the rear frame members.
No need to remove interior or dash. Just get what you can from the outside. Nothing but water imo, no soap or additive. _________________ Dave O

Sounds like this is best done on a REALLY hot day in August! ...so to be sure it all dries. _________________ www.edwardpowell.com |

Good use of the FF. I did mine inside ten years ago and it makes me feel good knowing those seams are well protected from intrusion. |
Did you find that you had any issues with smell when you did it? How thoroughly did you fluid film the inside when you did it? I'm thinking about finally tackling this job this weekend. |

I just had my jetta treated by a fluid film service center. You want to get it done while it's warm still (like now). I'm getting it ready for NY winter... Note, once you get it done, don't go through the car wash with the underbody wash spray. Wait until winter is over.
No noticeable orders. Leaves a transparent, dark brown color.
The treatment is good for a couple of years.

I used fluid film to undercoat my wife’s Camry. I pulled the door panels and did the inside of the doors as well. It smelled so bad I thought I was going to have to sell the car. It took a year for the smell to go away. I won’t do that again. I sure would not do that to my camper. Ask on a form and you will get lots of opinions that’s mine. John |

Never had any really noticeable smell from Fluid Film and I've done the whole interior under panels in the back. Wonder what's up with yours? Maybe my nose is broken? _________________ This free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

Ive been using a product called cosmoline for years and it is a really incredible rust inhibitor. I used to use fluid film but it seems to wear off pretty quickly compared to cosmoline. FF is great stuff too and I bet one could use a combo of cosmo and fluid film to really preserve ones van. I did the bottom 6 inches of the inside of my exterior panels (the top portions are sealed with dynamat extreme for sound but also gives corrosion protection by trapping out water and oxygen.) i have sprayed my entire under carriage and insides of my frame rails and i can honestly say that this stuff is an amazing product that truly protects a vehicle. It is a sprayable amber colored wax and water just beads off of the underside of my van. It is easily scraped off if you want to check on a spot to see if there is any corrosion forming. In 5 years on a island off the east coast of Massachusetts my van has formed zero rust where the cosmoline has been sprayed. I apply it about once a year but I’m sure you could go a lot longer in between applications. I have the whole kit including wands for applying in the frame rails and it is a pretty easy job. I have been extremely impressed with how it has performed. Cosmoline make several products. The ones that i use are the “Rust veto 342” in liquid form and i usually grab a few spray cans of 342 for quick reapplication of certain areas. You will not be disappointed if you try this product. The military uses cosmoline when shipping items over seas as a corrosion inhibitor and have been using it for years because it really works.

You can see the cosmoline in this photo and no evidence of corrosion
You can see the amber colored wax where it dripped from the inside of the frame before it fully cured.

no time today to read this entire threat > so forgive me if this is a silly question...
August is here and procrastination must END. It's time to spray the wax.
So I am assuming that just to start SPRAYING might not be good > rather, I should start with trying to CLEAN OUT the cavities first, correct? [or should I just go ahead and spray without cleaning?]
In order to clean the cavities, the only way I can think of is to wait for a very hot and sunny day, and blast the cavities with a garden hose. At least this would clean them out a little bit.
> wait a couple of hours for it all to dry out, then hit with WAX > correct?

Cleaning them out with water is fine but I would wait a week or more before waxing to make sure the water that has wicked into the nooks and crannies has time to dry out. You do not want to encapsulate the water in there. |
