Thanks for the tip. I ordered the 3 can pack of the "heavy stuff"

https://www.cosmolinedirect.com/cosmoline-rp-342-heavy-spray-military-grade-rust-preventive/

It's definitely what the military used. The smell was an instant flashback of my air force days.

It does have some smell that dissipated the next day.

It definitely has a distinct smell at first. It’s a little difficult to get that smell off of your hands. Latex gloves will be your friend (and a Tavel suit if you ever go big with a spray gun and compressed air.) I think you will be impressed with its rust and corrosion inhibiting properties. Ive been putting it to the test on my vehicles for over 15 years and it works and works well.

Cosmoline smells like victory. And old military rifles.

I really like Zinc Rich Primer. It really seems to hold up even in salty environs, like Michigan winters. Inside something like that frame, I'd be tempted to use it first, then wax, waxoil, or cosmoline whatever.

I got done pulling my whole interior out and fluid filming the back side of every seam two days ago. I'll be doing the exterior and frame here in the next few days. What I will say is that the fluid film STINKS! It's very pungent but after about 20 minutes I'm nose blind to it. About two months ago I fluid filmed some metal I left outside in the salty air and there is now no noticable odor unless you put your nose inches away. Luckily, I'm doing some travelling sans van for a few weeks. Hopefully it'll be odor free by the time I return!

I just wanted to follow-up now that I'm a few months out. The odor is gone so that is good news. Other good news is that I can see the fluid film weeping out the seams on the exterior of the van. It is quite clear that all my seams are soaked with the stuff so hopefully, there will be no rust for a long time.

I will caution folks who use fluid film though. On really hot days (90 degrees F+) the fluid film will become less viscous and run. I mean really run. I got back to my van on a hot afternoon and fluid film was dripping from my the rail above my windshield between the A-pillars. Luckily it all dripped onto my floor mats and missed the upholstery.I've had several hot days in my area since and the dripping has diminished/is more.
