Anyone ever mill the shaft on a dished cam oil pump down to the flat cam shaft length?

I have a customers engine that I'm doing mockup on and he purchased the wrong oil pump. It would seem that the only difference is the length of the shaft on the drive gear.

So again, anyone ever just milled the shaft down to the right size or is that taking too much of a risk and I should just get the right pump?

I do this all the time....

I use Meyle German oil pumps exclusively.

With these you just press the drive further into the gear, then clearance the body as needed.

Thanks Joe.

Just to be clear though it sounds like you are going the other way? Pressing the shaft further thru the gear on a flat cam pump to reach a dished cam?

I'd be milling off the end of the shaft and re-shaping the engagement flange on the end of it.

No press the drive further into the gear.

On some pumps the shaft doesn't have enough room.. It must be shortened.

You don't want to re-machine the tang (drive)... It is heat treated.

Then clearance the pump body as needed.

Ok, now I'm with you. I was picturing you pressing the shaft further towards the cam.

Also makes sense to not have to re-mill and heat treat the tang.

Thanks again.

I push the shaft through a little extra, grind the shaft down until its close to the gear, then press it back until its just below the gear surface, like it was (and the shaft/tang is the right length)

Thanks again guys.

I ended up measuring everything up, pressing it .098" and then turning the end back down in the lathe with a Cermet insert.
