My beloved wanders into the garage occasionally. She's always on the lookout for new equipment, be it tools or parts. The other day she asked when I got the grinder ... she hadn't noticed it before ... I've had that for years, I said. Which I have ... Didn't notice the new press though. (I mentioned I picked up the press a bit later)
She is very understanding and I love her dearly even though she likes to come in and give me a hard time once in a while. _________________ Love my Westy ...

So just getting the van running and on the road again after a year in the garage I'm itching to get out on a trip with it. My wife says ... I'll divorce you if it ruins our holidays ... She's just kidding of course but I'm thinking that we may be heading to the cabin in the car this time ... Unless I can get a bunch of miles in before we head out!
Cheers,

Summer 2012:
Howesight to Mrs. Howesight, on installation of the SVX engine:
"So, whaddaya think?"
Mrs. Howesight, pointing to the SmallCar header:
"Amazing. Soooo. . . is that the blower?"
Howesight, after deciding not to be all smart-alecky with any double entendre:
"Sure, honey. That's the blower. Right next to it is the flux capacitor"
Mrs Howesight:
" I thought they only had those in the movies. You're shitting me, right?"
2013 Update:
When I rev the SVX to give that modded Porsche sound, we both laugh and say how much we love the sound of "the blower". _________________ '86 Syncro Westy SVX |

My wife calls me her "child of the sixties" and she would say my license plate should read HPY 4 EVR.
For the actual quote of what Bride of Chuey says about the Doka, and she said the same about the Vanagon we had before it: "And we're off on another adventure in the AdventureVoggan."
Never has she complained about monies spent on my hobbies. She says it's all cool as long as "there are no other women". Fine with me!

I was out of town a few months ago and got a call from my wife that went something like this:
"I was just at an intersection next to an '85 Wolfsburg Westy like yours when a tin-top bronze beige Syncro with GoWesty wheels and about a 2" lift goes through the intersection. I looked over to see the guy driving the Wolfsburg's reaction and he was all bug-eyed and drooling. He looked just like you."
By osmosis, she is herself a Vanagon geek and does not know (or admit) it. _________________ Joe T.

I like this thread, but it is reversed in our family. He is the one complaining about my obsession with the Westy, complaining about the 60 mph highway speeds, the threat of breakdowns (never happened). If I could take a picture of his eye roll when I show him something I plan on buying, it would surely get a laugh.
And the phone call...."you got a box!!!" Meaning, what did you buy for the Westy NOW? |

We drove the van to the grocery store tonight (almost always drive the honda or audi) and on the way home my wife says "why are we going so fast?"
I say "what do you mean? I'm doing 40 in a 35, same speed as if you were driving us in the car."
She says "but it feels so unsafe in this thing." _________________ '88 vanagon*****'91 gti 1.8t*****'04 r32*****'11 suburban z71 |

More of a camping thing in general, but it happened in our westy.
Just before bed,
Me: pulling open the slider, "I'm going out to pee"
Her: "Do you want a flashlight?"
Me: "nah" ... thwack!
Her: laughter that continues to this day. _________________ '84 Wolfsburg Westfalia

Favorite quote overheard from passers by while Im chillin in the back of my parked Syncro Westy.. tinted windows... I can see them, they dont know Im in there..
Guy walks by with his Babe, he points at my 31" offroad tires
"Look Honey, its 4wd!"
She turns, points up at the Pop Top and says
"Look Honey, its a Camper!"
gotta love it, different priorities
him, romping
her, nesting
then theres the guy who points at my CLK wheels with Mercedes center caps
pointing at the wheels and turning to his wife, older guy says
"Look Honey, its a Mercedes Camper!"

The ex gf thought the van was ugly and scary at first, but slowly warmed up to it over time.
The new gf possibly loves the van more than I do (which speaks volumes). She gets upset when I don't choose the van for an outing, or when I refer to "it" or "the van" instead of "her" or "Big Red". I never thought I'd find anyone that has more anthropomorphic obsessive tendencies than I do towards a vehicle lol. We're currently long distance, and every time I send her a pic of the van, she swoons "Big Red!!! How is she? I miss her!".
We haven't had the time for a proper road trip yet, but needless to say, I've found a good copilot for the next adventure _________________ -Elliot

We're talking about where dh (usually darling husband, but in this case dumb husband) can part to take my youngest to the cast clinic at the hospital.
DH: I'll just park it where I parked the car last time.
Me: You mean on top of the Parkade (parking garage)!?
DH: Yeah.
Me: How are you going to get the Vanagon up there?
DH: Up the ramp.
Me: How are you going to get to the ramp? (I'm now getting the eye roll b/c I'm probably using my teacher voice).
DH: Obviously by driving through the Parkade.
Me: How far do you think you'll get before it gets stuck in the Parkade? After you destroy our pop top and we can't find another, can I get a High Top?
DH: So, you are saying the Vanagon might not fit in the Parkade?
Me: It does not fit in d/c lady's Parkade w/ the new wheels, so probably not.
DH: No, you can not get a High top, it sounds expensive.
Me: I'm not telling you next time b/c I'd really like a High Top.
The entire story reminded me of my Care Attendant days, when two different ladies got the high top (wheel chair bus) stuck in the entrance of Parkade. One lady was smart enough to stop right away and some nice man came and let the air out of the tires to help her to back it up. Then, she drove out the in, with no air in her tires and to the garage. Then, we had to get new tires.
Second lady, was a special kind of stupid and once she heard the scraping on top (van wedging itself in), since there were cars behind her, she kept going. Until she was so stuck, even with no air in the tires, it required the special big tow truck to pull her out. At least the tires were saved that time, the high top, not at all. _________________ 1987 Vanagon Westfalia GL Automatic

This was from our 10yr old son not the wife but I thought it fit. According to him a Westy is "a tent on wheels with some amenities". _________________ AK_Runner
