Ok, so I bought a used distributor off ebay. It's works fine, I think I finally have it timed correctly, and the car drives smoother than it ever has. However, the new condenser does not come with the retaining clip and I can't find one anywhere. Anyone have a source for this part? There are no Bugs in junkyards here, or I'd just go get one from a junk Bug.

Sure can. Getting ready to leave for work, but when I get home I'll be glad to. I have to take the distributor out to get to where the clip goes. It's a 070 DVDA distributor.

Really too bad, the car is running great, but I'm afraid to drive it with he wire sitting loosely in there.

Ok, so it's a blurry camera phone pic, but there it is. I'll take some better ones when I get home. The clip goes on the outside of the distributor in front of the condenser bracket and uses the condensers screw to hold it in place.

Really it means you have the wrong condenser. I've gotten the model you decribe before and it has a real long wire that goes to the coil. I've found they make a round hole condenser and a square hole conderser. Each has a fork on the conderser clamp to hold the connector on the dist. body. Maybe you could take/send it back. Unlike you, I had the old conderser and just cut the fork off and used the wrong conderser.

I bought the right one. It's the one listed on the list for my dist. Same exact part number. Also aircooled.net lists that you have to reuse your old clip. When the dist got here, it didn't have it.

Well, today after calling several places and all of them telling me they didn't have this clip, and a few even questioning why I would want a Vac advance instead of a Mechanical one, I decided to cut the retaining clip off the old 009's condenser and see if I could make it work. It did. Now I just need to have some daylight to fine tune the timing and all should be good. I took it out for a test drive, and although it has less pickup then I'd like, it runs very nicely. The flat spot is long gone. It's a proud day when you can sit in a VW with an engine you built, you tuned, and just hear it purr like a kitten.

i have seen alot of 72 & 73 distributors that have a seperate clip/clamping bracket to hold the plastic block from the condenser in.
maybe it is a CA only thing or something. sorry i dont have one.
you can get an old condenser for a 009 distributor and cut the tab part off (throw the wire and condensor away) and use it to secure the plastic wiring block. done it before works just fine

Yes, this is exactly what I did. Worked great. I can remember seeing this clip on some Bugs I worked on like 20 years ago, but none recently. I haven't seen a vac advance still on a Bug in years. All these people who think an 009 is a performance upgrade surprise me. If only they new.

Why not just get a condenser that has the retaining clip as part of it?

What distributor do you have?

Full part number please.

Condensers are interchangeable, i've seen Bosch condensers for the 009 sold with and without the integral clip.

Your distributor originally came with parts made in Germany and I doubt the current parts you get are made there.

If you want the clip, there's one in the classified for $25. It's attached to a distributor.

No... the actual condenser is the same, the only difference is the clip and the insulator for the pass through in the body.

The points is just a mechanical switch and the condenser is a shock absorber. Electrically they don't care if they're in a 009, a 034 or your 205C.

You're obsessing over something that is insignificant. I'm sure there are many other non-stock parts on your car. For example, if you have a fuel filter... it's not stock. If you have hose clamps on your fuel hose.. they're not stock. The fuel and oil in the car is not stock.

Get my point?

Hell - just grab a piece of sheet metal and fab one - its not like its under stress or anything. Till you get done cutting another one up, you could have made one.

I am hesitant about posting questions on forums because of the lack of respect that other people have for persons who are not as well informed in the mechanical/electrical workings of the VW. My question was simple and yet you post an answer that sounds condenscending, not just by me, but other people as well. Next time I will think twice about posting.

I am not the only person who likes to have stock items, when available, for their VWs. Many go out of their way to find stock equipment.

One last thing: Unless you are a trained therapist, I would hope that you can refrain from diagnosing mental behaviors that make yourself feel more superior over others.
