I went thru my auto trans awhile back. after a short while the tranny started sslipping but only at the shift points. I could let off the throttle and go again and no more slip.

I tore it down again to investigate the problem. I found the linings on teh clutch packs were flaking off and soft. So I rebuilt it again. Here's the problem. I started the engine today for the first time. If the tranny is in neutral all seems ok but if the tranny is in Park, it puts a load on the engine What did I do wrong this time that I didn't do the first time.

Sounds like the clutch packs are a little tight. The new plates may just be a little thick compaired to original. If they are assembled correctly, they will loosen up after a few miles.

Where did you get the parts for the trans? (out of curiosity for a friend)

The rebuild kits were both Transtar kits out of Indiana. My guess is the parts for the kits came from some offshore country. Everything in the kit wa fine except the lined parts. It was $110

After the second kit came and I was dissatisfied with it, I sent the parts out to be relined by an outfit in Cali. I can't remember the name.

I did adjust the cable according to Bentley a couple of different times to make sure that was not the problem.

I'm going to remove the valve body tonight to see if I got the little spring under the wrong little ball (check valve) and to make sure it didn't get a piece of dirt and to make sure I didn't flip on of the valve body pistons.

Wish me luck

I may have found my problem but it's too early to tell just yet. When I installed my valve body, the shift linkage may not have been properly engaged into the manual valve. I disassebled teh valve body and all was correct. I'm almost sure i checked teh engagement of the manual valve and the linkage but maybe not. i hope that is the problem. if so, i won't have to pull the tranny. i'll reassembel tomorrow and give her a test. Say a prayer for me.

Update: Apparently some one listened to my last post and said a prayer for me. Whoever you are, I thank you. My suspisions were correct. the shift linkage inside the tranny was not properly engaged with the manual shift valve. After re-assembly today the car ran fine. And the new linings worked great because there is no slippage between shifts, which is why I tore it down in the first place.
