My 356 wheels, and my Mangles all have holes in them to reach the adjusters....my smoothies don't...it looks like I have to take my wheels off to adjust my brakes ???

Nope... you don't adjust them, ever... Wink

You should still be able to access the hole with the cap off on Vw drums.

356 drums adjusting hole is more on the outer edge of the drum, looks like you will have to remove the smoothies.

Yea...that,s what I'll have to do.....I'll look at the adj access hole in the drum and see if I can drill holes in the rims. The drag would be different w/o the wheel/tire in place so adjusting with those off might be a learning curve.

Drill the wheel, then get them balanced...for the best balance allow them to add weight on either the outside or inside wheel flange..some dont like the look of the weight on the outside flange, but you get a much better balance.

Good idea...however my bug won't go fast enuf to notice if the wheels/tires are balanced.
As far as ruining a smoothie...it won't be seen under a hubcap, plus even most VW people likely would notice even if I left the hubcap off.

drilling a hole in the wheels to adjust the brakes would be like cutting off the rear apron the remove the engine. Are you that lazy? how often are you adjusting brakes that you cant get the floor jack and the impact gun out and take the wheels off? good time to give the wheel wells a good cleaning too Wink

At 55mph you will feel the imbalance.

At 25mph the tire will feel the difference!

If you must run smoothies, I think I would pull the drum off and mount the wheel to the drum. mark the wheel through the brake adjuster hole and drill 1 hole in the wheel. You don't need 5 holes, just 1.

This way you still get better feel for your brake adjustment by having the mass of the wheel/tire bolted in place.

And if you got your wheels spin balanced ON the car, they would always go back on in the correct lug location. But good luck finding a shop that knows how to spin balance on the car and has the machine to do that!
