I bought a pre-70 200mm clutch kit, but I have a horrible feeling that I have bought the wrong one and that this is a 70+ clutch throw arm and gearbox. Can anyone confirm this for me please?
If it is 70+ is there anything else I need apart form the release bearing, am I missing any fixings or are they part of the release bearing?
Thanks. _________________ 1969 UK Karmann Ghia build http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=518789&highlight= |

The 70 and up transmissions have the sleeve around the input shaft like yours, so you need the newer style throw out bearing. The bearing will come with new retaining clips, so you shouldn't need anything else to install the new bearing. |

Also remember your pressure plate should be the late type with out the ring. If you have an early pressure plate you can usually remove the ring so the fingers or diaphram run directly on the throwout bearing |

I need help deciding what type of throw out bearing to purchase, very confused looking at all the variations. I have a KCR built IRS transmission. The guy working on my engine is balancing the pressure plate and asked me to send him a pic of the throw out bearing cross shaft. When he got the pic, he said I had an 'early' one meaning pre 71? Not sure why that is since my Ghia is a 71, but perhaps when you get a custom transmission built they just send whatever, unless you specifically state what you want. See pics.
And here is my pressure plate
I was told based on the cross shaft that the collar stays on. That's fine, but given the cross shaft, can someone please let me know what type of bearing to purchase, and what if any clips I need as well? Hopefully the experts can tell by the pics what to recommend.
Thanks for your help

Thanks guys, that's the one I was looking at and wanted to confirm. Check on the safety wire.
I was also told the cross shaft was not a heavy duty style, do you recommend I change that as well since I'll be running a 2332cc. Does it make a difference?
Is that something that's fairly easy to do? I am a bit mechanical and have lot's of cool tools, unless I need something specific to remove, like an 8lb BFH!

I'd also replace that seal that is behind the throwout bearing, it is very easy to get to now, and really annoying to have to take the engine out later if it leaks.
......... bitter experience |

Despite how it looks, the transmission has never been used since being built 5-6 years ago, it's just been sitting mounted all the years I was deployed, so not sure why I would have to change the seal. It was also filled with fluid about 2 years ago.

because if it has been sitting for 5 years dry, it may have hardened. For a couple of bucks you might as well. |

Bentley says to coat the outer edge with compound sealant. Any specific type I should use or anyone can recommend? Or is that what they use to call gasket sealer?

Factory says to use sealant for that and the flywheel seal. My dad never did, and we have not done so for over 3 decades and almost 400,000 miles. Just make sure the bore is clean of corrosion or scratches, and no sharp edges. Use oil to lube up the seal inside and outside just before installing.
Have used 300-400 grit wet dry sandpaper to polish any suspect bore to get it to seal up. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Thank you Sir. I don't remember my dad ever using sealant for that spot when he was building VW engines. If you look at my pics above, it looks like KCR did use something, so if the seal fits as tightly as it looks, I figured a little oil would suffice to slide into place.
Since I don't plan to purchase a tool just to extract the seal, even though I dig buying tools, I will be careful when removing and check the surface to ensure no scratches or scarring.
All this info has been very helpful, thanks.

This way is primitive, but effective:

As mentioned in that thread there is a blueprint for the proper tool that should be in the "Local Manufacture of Tools" accessible thru the "Technical" button of this TS website. Seek the "VW Tools" column there. Tis a fascinating collection to go thru often. All the blueprints were available to VW dealers so as to allow them to make many of the air cooled VW specific tools they needed. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

I like the double screw method...immediate action to solve a problem!
Have seen the tool section but thanks for the reminder. I always read those in Hot VW's every month.
