Hey, how'd you get a light over the passenger door, or did you add it yourself? I thought it strange that my passenger door had no light, but figured they were all like that!

I added it. There is a cover plate on the hole, you should be able to feel it under the headliner. I changed all of my lights. Those particular lights came out of the rear of a late 1999 to 2005 Golf/Jetta. The hole will need to be slightly enlarged to add these lights. I even added the small frame that these lights fit into and they hold the headliner tight to the hole. |

Great, thank you! I don't remember seeing a plate over my passenger side door, will look around next time I'm in the van. I should be able to add that myself, too! And, sure we'll have a few Jettas in our junk yards. I'll want one for both sides. I will have to add it to my list which grows faster than I can find things and/or do them, though, it's 7pm now and kids are just going to bed, *almost* light enough that I could go and do the shelf lining in the cupboards and get to that long list of cleaning people added to my almost long list! LOL
Charlie looks happy with his own light too and is super cute btw!

Why does everything get more complicated when you guys break down the instructions for me into the basic steps. And, how do you guys always catch when I missed the hard part? LOL Thank you so much. I'd have figured it out when I went and looked at my door and saw nothing there, which is what I though in the first place! Going to have to wait until someone shows me how to run wires under the headliner with out damaging anything! LOL And, don't do it now b/c I still haven't put my stereo in or done my cleaning or put my new plug and cover in! LOL Though, knowing you guys that's already up here somewhere.

Just be prepared to run the wires needed from the drivers side dome light under the headliner. |

just be glad they're not telling you to run the wires down the Pass door pillar so you can have the light come on only when the pass door opens.
like I did.. that was a major PITA fishing the wires thru the small hole that isn't accessible under the dash.. Ohh and I had my Dash removed and still cursed and bled for an hour. _________________

Good idea to move the thread.
What year did they change the headliner? Here is what I was talking about on my '84.
This will be over the rear seat on the slider side.

If you push on the headliner, you can feel that cover plate. Here I located each end.

Then I made a few cuts.

After the cuts are made, you can pull that plate out.

The plate.

If you want to install a period correct light, all you need to do is run the wires then pop in the light and you are done.

Now, if you want to upgrade to the mkIV lights, the hole will need to be trimmed in order for them to fit correctly. Not much needs to be taken out. This is the ring that you would use with the newer style lights. These hold the headliner into the hole and allow the lights to be installed and removed with ease. I laid it over the cover plate so you can see approximately how much needs to be trimmed.

I ran all my wires from the drivers side under the dash when I had my dash out. |

yes, i have the ones in the first pic, they came from a new bug
i just wired another set into a syncro, it's easy to feed the wires across the roof lining if you undo the screws by the pop top hatch, job took no more than 30 minutes. _________________ lucy our westy

I used a flexible fish tape like this: http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/GREENLEE-Fish-Tap...20172638:s It's basically speedometer cable out of the sheath but mine's only 20ft long or so. It was very easy to go down the pillar and come out behind the glove box, only took a minute. Replacing the wire on the driver side was an entirely different experience though. Using speedometer cable seems to work way better than the normal steel fish tape, I just bend a slight kink at the end and twirl the cable like a plumbing snake to get around all the bends and into the small holes. I'd be worried that running wiring across the headliner to the other dome light would eventually be visible and sag the headliner. _________________ _____________________
