Now just to add to the confusing info from the vendors we have this useful bit posted earlier in the thread on page 5 from JERON
"Front inner
All 14" and 16" (with/without locker) --> 100mm 251498103AX*
*VW part number for cv joint without boot and grease. For some reason differs the part numbers for the 90mm cv joints with boot and grease for 14" with and without locker. For the 16" are two different boots available (3 and 4 folds).
back outer and inner
14" always 100mm
16" always 108mm
100mm cvj (fits also 2WD and inner front axle):
VW: 251598101 X
Spidan: 22407
SKF: VKJA8004
108mm cvj:
VW: 431498103CX (also audi and skoda)
Spidan: 20273
SKF: VKJA8005
108mm cvj ['Heavy Duty' 'versterkt' 23gr i.p.v. 17gr]
Porsche: 91133292301 ? (porsche 911, audi 200, opel omega?)
Spidan: 21897
SKF: VKJA8829
Busschmiede has set of 6 HD cv joints voor €500,- these are Spidan.
108mm cvj [idem, porsche 930, 25gr i.p.v. 17gr] (http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=417210 for details)
Porsche:930 332 034 00 (porsche 930)
Spidan: 21850 / 21882
SKF: VKJA8808
Some owners match the front and rear flanges (either by modifying to 108mm flanges, CV joints and axles [different splines] in front or 100mm in rear), for the ease of spare parts during overland trip."
Here is something out of place regarding all this info.
The vendors are selling the rear cv joint same as the front inner cv joint for 16" where I'm seeing different diameters here. My rears fit my front inner.
But 108 rears fitting front 98mm inner with locker? _________________ This free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

In the VW Factory Parts numbering system an "X" added at the end of the number means "remanufactured" and there may be a charge if your old part isn't exchanged. Without the "X" it is a completely newly built part.

I've a few questions about axle shaft assemblies and the Front Diff-Lock.
I have seen two separate part numbers for axle shaft assemblies:
251407271J and 251407271JX
I am fairly certain the designating "J" is only for 14" and the 16" without the Diff-Lock.
My real question is whether or not the "JX" designation is for the 16" with the Diff-Lock?

Wonder if the the general VW parts vendors know that?
As they have remanufactured parts listed as "J's"
Good to know info, thanks. _________________ This free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

I have a 16" doka syncro and need to replace the springs. Do you know if the original springs are the same as 14" or are they the same as the 14" syncro springs that have a bit of a lift to them.

The answer is you really cannot, but I could be wrong.
Look through this thread for pictures of the body re-inforcement added around the pillars and also the rear interior side panels will have the open spaces filled with welded in panels.
The front suspension came from the LT trucks.
Read up on the diameter of the CV joints. The 16's are larger.
Check your transaxle and front diff codes. They will tell you what the ring and pinion gear ratio is. _________________ This free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

Does anyone have a source for the front outer CV Joints? (with Locker).

Well, it's only taken close to 2 years to find a set, but I did find a source though I am not sure how long it will last!

Is there any difference between the rear wheel hubs on a 16" compared to a 14"? _________________ This free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

Yes. The obvious difference is the bolt pattern to the brake backing plate. |

umm....are you thinking of the rear wheel bearing housing?
I was referring to the rotating hub with the wheel lugs on it.
I thinking there might be a difference in the length of the stub axle? (A small difference.)
The part numbers are different so wondering why.

Looks like the syncro 16 hub uses 41mm wheel studs vs the 34.5mm studs used on a regular syncro or 2wd. I am unaware if anything else differs as well. |

Dear all
I have following question
I owe a '89 syncro 16". As far as i know standard springs and dampers. To store the sparewheel and other stuff i build myself a rack on the rear bumper. I actually made a mistake as i built it as one swing arm full width so its really heavy to move and cant hang without support when open
Also i wonder if it has not become to heavy over all.
I have a spare wheel, Hi lift jack, 20 ltrs of fuel, an alu box with some stuff in it (some spare oil, jump cables etc) and on top camping table and chairs.
But looking at some pics on the web i see people having a spare an 4 jerryt cans on the back which seems to be at least just as heavy.
The ride heigth at the rear is 17,5" when loaded like this and without all (incl rack) its 18,3"
So i wonder, am i ok like this or do i need heavier springs? Not sure what is the std ride height.
I have searched the forum and the web but couldn't find anything conclusive
any advise, suggestion is welcomed
rgds
Ron
