I actually swapped 14" drums to the back of my 16 purely for serviceability here in NA. it is great that drums are now available, but shoes, hardwear, wheel cylinders... Those are all still unobtainium. _________________ SF

Sweet ride. Can you tell me a bit about your solar panel setup? It looks as if they are recessed into the fiberglass?
What is your solar rig setup from panels to inverter?

Looks like a good score. That's the right part number so you should be GTG.
I would buy some spares if the quality looks good since that they are a wear item. |
I forgot to post back here about the brake drums.
They are made in Italy. Very well machined. Can't say how good the metal is, time will tell. I'm happy with the price and quality.
Even better price right now.

So nobody has any recipes to offer up on big brakes for the 16? I'm not there yet on my project but starting to think about it. _________________ Please do not message me on TheSamba. Use my email, [email protected] |

Kirk Meeks at NorthWesty had a kit for Syncro 16" big brakes.
http://www.kirkmeeks.com/syncro_store
Looks like their website is under repair though. Drop him a line to see if still available.
I would love to hear any feedback from someone who has these. _________________ Currently:

The syncro 16 yahoo group has some pictures and likely more details on the big brakes.

Bottomline is dual piston G60 calipers with ML320 303mm discs are an economical front brake upgrade. Larger discs are possible up to 330mm but watch your caliper to discs clearances.
Rear brakes rarely need service compared to fronts. IMHO, just fix what's there. Parts are easy enough to obtain via EU suppliers. An alternative I would consider is rear disc conversion. However, be aware parking brakes are bit the greatest on the rear calipers which also utilise the same for parking brake duties. No biggie on a lightweight Doka. On a heavy camper, holding steady on a hill might be a slippery slope, so to speak. |

His website is actually up at:
http://www.north-westy.com/
I posted a link off of the KirkMeeks.com for syncro conversion and learned this two days ago.
Apparently this is the new site. Pass it on! _________________ Happiness=Portland, Oregon in the rearview mirror! |

pics of the set up on the 16" yahoo page, did this to mine nearly a year ago now. G60 calipers, 303mm merc ML discs, roughly 1.5mm spacer on caliper
View from above of spacers and centering of disc
Brake pads slipped in
Caliper bolted on with the help of child labour
Looks like i have found the perfect flexi for the G60 calipers.. its the front flexi off a VW sharan. 495mm in length, M10 male one end and m10 female the other. All that is needed is the bracket for flexi on the chassis to have the hole drilled out to 17mm, as the end of the flexi is slightly bigger
Sorted out the flexi's for the front brakes this evening, i think they have fitted quite well, almost spot on.
Had to drill the bracket for the flexi (chassis mount) out to 16.5mm
from this
to this
all then fitted nicely
Even the rubber protecter things could be positioned in a helpful place
Tried the fit of them on full lock either way, once on the stands and again with the wheel on back on the ground. Just about right i reckon..
just need to bleed them tomorrow and test them out!
The brakes do feel nice, it is a nice step up from standard. Only downside is the standard 16" steels won't fit unless you fit a spacer as they foul the caliper _________________ 16" syncro multivan pop top AHU TDI

That's a bummer. I'm defiantly going to keep the stock wheels. IMO a 16" just would not look right without those big old steel rims on it.
I'll give Kirk a call and see what he has to offer. Maybe I'll just wind up keeping the stock stuff. It just seems like with the 16 it might actually be cheaper to put parts from common NA market cars on then the OE brakes. _________________ Please do not message me on TheSamba. its only a matter of a 5-10mm spacer, so you can still use the steels. I haven't been that bothered because i am using CLK's at the moment. When my van comes back from the bodywork it'll be getting longer studs, mainly so i can fit bigger tyres (with spacers) but it will also mean i can fit the steels again if needed.
the bigger brakes really help with fade, so well worth the slight bother of fitting a small spacer. Would be good to hear if kirks set up needs spacers as well. _________________ 16" syncro multivan pop top AHU TDI

While my rig isn't a factory 16" I just got fed up with trying to make the original parking brake cables work with my Burley 16" trailing arms and Burley disc brake conversion. I'm about done with making my custom parking brake cable set up, if anyone is interested, about $150 for a pair will get you cables without the forward plastic ferrules that VW uses and way better parking brake holding with the revised cables plus, they run above the rear drive axels so less likely to be damaged while off roading. |

I think the closest thing to the n shock are the OMEs. I have not tried the trail master stuff though. They may have something better. I'm still not sure what I'm going to run on my truck yet.
Zoehsix please share your e-brake set up when you're done. Sounds great. _________________ Please do not message me on TheSamba. Use my email, [email protected] |

I have boge N on the front, on the rear i have trailmaster HD
http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/index.php/t3-parts/t3-...ar-hd.html
These are a slightly longer shock so you need a 20mm lift or more. They feel very well matched with the standard ones.
Here's a link to the trailmaster HD fronts
http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/index.php/t3-parts/t3-...sport.html
last i heard brickwerks were developing a 16"equivalent shock _________________ 16" syncro multivan pop top AHU TDI

Aside from tire size, is the 16" higher than a 14" due to spring height or is it a body lift? I'm wondering if there are any special considerations for front shocks on a 16, like do they have to be longer than the standard 14" shocks. |

I'm in the process of looking for front shocks for my 16. I've discovered that the 14 syncro shocks will not work well with the stock 16 steel wheels. The big difference is the weight of the wheel. The rebound for the 14 is different compared to the heavier 16 wheel. That is the biggest difference I've discovered with shocks between 14 and 16. Also the springs are different but I don't know if they are longer. I was told by a good source that Bilsteins modified will work. Adjusted for the heavier wheel. I'm still looking into the Bilsteins.
I just did the G60 setup with a 8mm spacer to use the original front wheels. I believe that 6mm spacer may work. I will try this soon.
I had to grind off 1/8" of the outer edge of the caliper to clear my wheels.
So far great stopping. |

Personally I would just payout for the proper 16" dampers while they are still available, they are REALLY good. Expensive, but worth it.
I had stock 14" dampers on the van beforehand and they were fine too _________________ 16" syncro multivan pop top AHU TDI

Hey Loyd post up a p/n or link to these shocks. I would be interested.
