Anyone know what date they started producing syncros with the reinforced longitudinal frame rails? From what i have seen in pictures the syncro 16 did not have this reinforcement? _________________ Reference Automotive: NW Washingtons Vanagon Specialist. (360)366-6965. referenceautomotive.com |

Can you post a picture of the reinforcement you are referring to.? _________________ This free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

As another person stated, which rails are you referring to? I know the interior had reinforcement but not sure what you're referring to on the undercarriage. _________________ Chris

I managed to break my original tire carrier latch. Any chance someone knows of a source for a replacement?
Thanks all...

I think if they were available, more people would use them.

Buying directly form VW Classic Parts was the original plan because they have the part as well, but VW Classic does not seem to sell/ship to the US. Am I right about that?
The part photo at Mecatechnic has the VW Classic Parts logo, so it seems to be coming from VW Classic anyway, only difference is that Mecatechnic ships to the US. |

I think you are correct. The International Resellers page on their site doesn’t show any in US but there are 3 in British Columbia you may want to try.

Yes they are different. 16" Syncros got heavier CVs from the LT range of VW trucks. _________________ Currently:

This is my 1991 westy syncro 16". I bought it in Finland in 2008. Flew in and drove it home to Holland. Originally it was a 1.6 turbodiesel but I converted it to a 1.9 mtdi. Front and rear difflocks, decoupler, power steering, twin spare wheel carriers, bullbar, warn winch, solar panels, outside safari shower. Full euro westy with eberspacher night heater on diesel. I bought this syncro for overland travel. Most fun vehicle I've ever owned. Cheers, Rob. |

I will add the 16" Syncro CV is from an Audi, not LT, with 28 splines, vs 33 splines on a Syncro 14".
There's an odd ball CV joint I discovered from my UN1 transmission swap years ago, 108mm 33 splines, from a T4 Eurovan up to 07/1994. After that they were 28 splines. I have no idea why VW decided on making them with 33 splines, as it's unique to this model, but it was very helpful for my set up. DeLorean flanges on the transmission side, 108mm, and stock 100mm CV wheel side using the 33 splines axle.
