Is there any way to tell which terminal s supposed to be ground and which gets + 12V?

Most fuel pumps have it marked on them. |

I have seen different sized posts as well....IIRC, larger +, smaller -. |

Might just be a red + painted on as I recall. |

Here is my problem - I think the old pump is bad and removed it for bench testing.
But I want to hook it up correctly for testing. I don't see any polarity markings anywhere. There is an "R" which you can see in the photo, BUT BOTH terminals have that "R" on them.
Any ideas?

Clean the build up from the end of the pump and Look for the polarity marking molded into the plastic. _________________ 1988 Vanagon
