Why did you choose to repair the heater channel instead of replacing it? How did you treat the rust inside? Also, are you painting the car green again?

The actual heater channel itself was in good shape, so I reused it once I cleaned it up and repainted it. For me the rocker metal that surrounds the channel was shot, specially the bottom piece with the captive nuts that the body bolts go into. I actually bought all separate pieces and replaced them while the body was still on the car. I also used the Eastwood rust encapsulator kit to do the tunnel and heater channel areas. I'm going to try and color match the green that's on the car now for all the new sections of new metal on the car.

I am not sure if I want to go the route that you did for my heater channels. The right side is pretty bad in the rocker area, but the drivers side looks perfect, except for the front wheel well portion.

You could do a full one on one side, and just a front section for the other. One thing I found out about the front sections was that they did not come with the bottom piece that has the captive nuts for the front body bolts. I had to make those myself and weld them to the top section. Since I still had the body on the pan at that point, it allowed me to line everything up nicely.

Ok, so I managed to color-match the paint on the car. Turns out it's a base coat clear coat urethane, so that should make blending any areas a little easier.

I'm dry fitting up the front end and getting the 73 bumper brackets to fit up with the ugly 74 triangular holes. I'm also going to move the bumper about an inch closer in to the body. So today I modified the brackets and started work test fitting one of the brackets. I also have the 73 bumper hole seals.

Front of car with one of the new brackets. I should mention that I already welded in the 73 bumper repair sections on both sides that take the 73 solid mounts.

Wow most people would have hauled it off for scrap. Nice work saving your ride.

Well, I would too if I were to do it over again. Something to be said about "ignorance is bliss" when it comes to car projects and kids!! I finished the other bumper bracket hole today. The reassembly to test fit everything before paint is kind of a nice place to be after all the years of welding and fabrication.

It's a small Lincoln WeldPak 110 with the shielding gas set-up and .023 wire. Does everything from 22 gauge to 1/4 inch. Its been a bullet proof machine for the last 10 years.

Nice work on the bumper slots.

It will probably make you cringe but I just did the opposite, turned a 71 fender into a late one for my 74 Laughing

Thanks. Not cringe, but you probably had the easier job of it! Smile

Getting ready for paint. Building a paint booth around the body with clear plastic, a box fan, and airconditioning filters. And I'm sanding, and sanding, and sanding...

Ha! Better hurry, I might just have it done in a year or two! Wink The government sequester is giving me an extra day a week to work on it, so hope to at least get it painted this Summer.

The wife and I are house shopping so we haven't had a whole lot of time. Plus I keep fixing other people's junk. Soon I hope. I'm stockpiling tools for now.

Teaser alert.
Got some color matched paint on the bug. Had some issues with the clear coat, so had to sand it down with 400 then 800. Waiting for a low humidity day to reshoot. Then the body goes back on the pan!

In the new house yet??

Closing date is September 27th. We had to renegotiate with the sellers after the appraisal came in 10K low. Hopefully done jumping through hoops and just waiting now. When I get the house you can come by and see the bug, but it's not moving until a couple of weeks after we get settled in.
