Well I've been meaning to post a build thread for a long time, and I have promised to do so in the past. So I'm finally getting to it. It will take a while to get all the pics up, but I have to start somewhere don't I. The below photo is when I first bought the car back in 1999. An unassuming 74 Super with one piece windows and 4 into 1 exhaust. It was a good commuter car compared to the gas hungry Pathfinder next to it.

Then I got rear ended by a drunk driver on the way home from work about 8 months after I bought the car. At that point I had replaced the drivers side floor and heater channel. You can see the truck that rear ended me in the right of the photo. Driven by a three time looser that had no license and 3 DUI's at the time. He also took out 4 other cars besides mine. And then tried to flee the scene.

This was what I had left when I cut out all the accident damage. If I would have really gone through the car closely at that time, I would have scrapped it then, instead of taking on the absurd amount of work that would follow! The only thing I had a lot of at that point was time and ambition. Since I had never done any welding or body work up to that point, I figured by the time I got done, I would pick up some new skills and learn a lot more about the inner workings of the bug. That was the level of denial and clueless blind ambition I was functioning at at that point! Wink

I managed to find a Gold 74 super that someone was scrapping. Probably in better shape than mine was! I used a sawall and cut off the sections that I needed. Plus got a bunch more stuff like seats, steering wheel, death-foam replacement sections, rear fender, and a rear deck lid. This pic was of final fitting before the big MIG stitch job that was to come.

Of course a routine job like this was just too easy, and going along too well. So life got in the way and caused a move. I had to get the bug to a point that I could move it to the next house, or I'd have to scrap it. I worked pretty nonstop for about two weeks to get it to the point where it would survive a move of about 40 miles. This was the rear corner back together from the accident damage.

Which makes you exactly like the rest of us.

Yes, it's monumental. But in the end it's a thumb in the eye of the drunk driver.

What happened to him, anyway?

I'm sure he got right back into another car and did it again! After all, this was his third DWI and he was already driving without a license. He went to trial, and I didn't even have to testify due to all the other people he took out during that accident. Years later, my car is going back together and is completly rebuilt. So life goes on....

Small update, got my refurbished steering box, pitman arm, drag link, and steering universal arm with new rubber booties back on the car.

These booties were not on the original car when I got it, and they weren't easy to find. Jon at Topline took care of me with those.

Why did you choose to repair the heater channel instead of replacing it? How did you treat the rust inside? Also, are you painting the car green again?
