|
|
with a little encouragement from a friend, time to document the build. Time is flying by and after the last few wrench times, I realized there is a little more modification to a buggy than a typical beetle rebuild. All the easy stuff is done, and I'm heading into the hard stuff.. All the help and suggestions are appreciated.
First few pics will document my progress over the last 3 months or so..
started off as a super beetle...
found this to seriously help with shortening the tunnel..
changed the frame head...
starting the body mod

Most would consider what you already have done as the "Hard Stuff". Your pan looks great, the head graft on a Super pan was a step or two beyond a normal build (if there is such a thing as a normal build). It looks like you stretched a Manx clone very successfully which many don't think can be done well. Short of a crazy powerful engine rebuild whats got you spooked?
Just fishing for compliments? Seriously, looking good, just keep it up. _________________ Gary

Looking good. Do you know what size rims those are and tire size front/ rear? |
they are 15 wheels, and the tires are, rear: 235/75 and the fronts are 205/65.
I was looking to put some 31" tires on the rear but they didn't fit. want to roll it for a while before I upgrade to larger tires.
*edited tire size. _________________ PLM.....

its the fine workings of customization and experience... I'm no fool to listen to the advice of those who have paved the way before me. Shortening the pan would have been much more of an undertaking had Murzi not shown up and shared his experience.
buggies got me into vw's and I plan to be driving one soon.
thanks for the compliment on the work so far, I've been studying this forum for a while As far as the longer body, all we cut out was 8 inches, just a little more leg room _________________ PLM..... |

What wasn't shown, and I am not sure we have pics of, was the two 8 foot pieces of tubing we stuck on the front frame head and rear torsion to check for squareness. The long pieces magnify the twist and and position front to rear. If you are on the money at the end of the tubing.....three foot out, then you are perfect at the frame head. We were......

looks like you've got a J.C. Fiberglass "sandwinder". I've got one too! Can't wait to see how yours ends up! |

I've got pics coming.... Just need to upload them. I cut the bazooka exhaust and welded on some hayabusas. Working on the seat sliders.

You see a bunch of Red x's? I see the pics just fine. Doesn't that usually mean a broken link? If I have to start uploading them to the site I will. But I've never had an issue with photobucket. _________________ PLM..... |

Are you gonna be done by Summer? |
that's the plan!
The body is not on straight, nor is the rear bumper so the following pick is just a quick mock up.

and what I worked on tonight, adjustable seats...loathed the idea of the cheap sliders so I ordered a little nicer set. @ 6'5" leg space is a needed luxury, and overall I'm happy with it.
all the way back. At least 5" of travel
piece of angle Iron mounted on seat sliders

thanks for the compliment, I cannot claim ownership of the idea of the pan shortening technique, it was Murzi's idea. Though I've utilized it helping out another PLMer changing a bent frame head. worked great! _________________ PLM..... |

J.C Fiberglass actually made the California Clipper, which is what the hood is off of on this build. (The whole Clipper is the blue body in the background shown in the first photo of the post)
I'm not sure who made the body used in this build, it could be a Sandwinder, which were manufactured by R&H Fiberglass.
Anyway, nice job so far. The build looks great. _________________ -------------------------
