|
|
Hey guys. The shaft in my original German solex 34pict3 carb maybe starting to slop. I'm toying with the idea of getting another carb and keeping my original for parts.
I'm wondering what's best? Find a good rebuilder of original German solex carbs? If so where?
Buy a brand new carb? If so what and were?
Feel free to throw any more advise at me also. Thanks

I would select a Carb Rebuilder in the Samba Classifieds.
Possible choices.

I recently purchased a rebuilt a 34 PICT-3 from Tim at Volkzbitz. I am very pleased with its operation. It is a very thorough rebuild including rebushing the throttle shafts. I would far sooner have an original rebuilt carb than a new one. I actually had previously purchased a new carb and I was not happy at all with it. Go for the rebuild. They are several carb rebuilders in the classifieds that provide this service. http://volkzbitz.com/ _________________ 1960 beetle

I also purchased one from Tim at Volkzbitz about 6 months ago and it has worked great. I preferred getting a rebuilt German over new Chinese _________________ ____________

I would much prefer a freshly rebuilt OE German carb to a brand new made in China carb!
My parts supplier says all the new carbs are now coming from China...no more Mexico or Brazil _________________ Doc

I prefer the Solex OE German Carburetor.
I have found that the Bocar (Brasil) Carburetor is still available in North America.

As I mentioned in my first post, I bought a new "China" carb which now serves as a paper weight in my garage. It was money wasted. You may find a used carb or even a rebuilt one for less and it may work just fine. One area of wear that is not always addressed in a rebuild is the throttle shaft. Volkzbitz does this rebushing procedure on his rebuilds and this can make a major difference in how the carb adjusts and runs. Sometimes this term "rebuilt" gets thrown around pretty loosely with engines, generators and carburetors. It can mean a lot of things. At least with Tim at Volkzbitz you know what his rebuild includes. _________________ 1960 beetle

I never had the displeasure of messing with a Chinese imitation 34 PICT-3 carburetor, but I did get
a BOCAR (hecho en Mexico) unit a few years ago. A good close look at most of the machined areas revealed
the shoddy, raggedy workmanship. The surface of the base (that mates with the intake manifold) was not
flat. Most of the plugs, the throttle shaft "bushings", and the joint between lower and top half slowly oozed
gas. One of the mounting studs was loose.
There is no price low enough that would make this kind or crap worth the bargain.
IMO, anyone who can possibly get a decent rebuilt Solex carb, and chooses not to in order to save a few
bucks, is a fool. _________________ '67 bug: seized by the authorities

I notice Volkzbiz has rebuilt Solex Bocar 34pict 3 carbs for sale. Would this be as suitable as a original VW german Solex?

I have not used a Bocar so I cannot comment on that. I do note that his rebuild price is the same for both carbs. If you purchase outright with no core then the German Solex is $30 more. I think that would be my first choice. Perhaps others more experienced with Bocar carbs can offer further insight. _________________ 1960 beetle

I like others would much prefer to have a refurbished German component over a new none fitting part. With that said carb rebuilders, head rebuilder, etc have the knowledge to do the job right. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

Get a well rebuilt German Solex 34 PICT 3 carb and a new SVDA distributor and you will think you died and went to heaven. I have spent countless hours trying to get BOCAR carbs to work. Just bolted on my Mark Harney rebuilt carb and it purred like a kitten. Set the idle and have been driving the car almost daily for the last 4 months without a single issue. _________________ All it takes is a little imagination, some mechanical ability, and neighbors who mind their own business

I found a Bocar 34 series carb still in the box in a lot of parts I bought a couple of years ago. Because I didn't know the history, I put a rebuild kit in it. The parts I took out looked like new and there was no fuel residue anywhere. I don't think it had been installed since "new" or "rebuilt". I didn't consider it a waste to rebuild it since I wanted to use it on my woods buggy. I can't say that it is as good as a Solex 34 series since I haven't used one of those in years - a couple of my last VW's had dual carb set-ups or 30 series Solex carbs on them.
After the initial adjustment, the 34 PICT from Bocar has performed very well, quick response, etc. I don't know how long it will last, but the last couple of years has proved it was worth the very few dollars I paid for it. |
