Was looking for an unmolested pre-1967 for about 4 months. Not many left in Texas. Finally zeroed in on this one and bought it yesterday from a college student who only had it for one year. Before him it was owned by a doctor for many years. It has (the original?) 1300 engine - need to get birth certificate to verify. It's still 6 volt. It leans a little to one side and it has mismatched front fenders. Interior is in very good condition. Windows are really hard to crank though.

When I first became a member of TheSamba.com I only owned a Thing. Now I have to think about changing my user name or at least the avatar. Rolling Eyes

I have a couple of quick questions:

The issue with the windows being hard to crank - is this a common problem and any tips on how to fix?

Can anyone refer me to a good thread on a conversion to 12 volts?

Take a look at the front fenders. I'm told the FL is earlier (see position of blinker). Am I better off trying to re-position the blinker or track down a replacement fender?

Thanks for your help! Look forward to being part of the beetle community!

Nice car!

Here is a thread about 6 volt to 12 volt that is in the FAQ's:

Congrats, nice find. Welcome to the '66 Club Very Happy

It looks real nice and it's apparent the car has had some restoration done.
As far as the windows, the PO probably had the felt window channels replaced and they can be a little tight fitting when new. The outside scrappers on the doors look new too, and they can also drag on the window from rubber friction.

To reduce the friction on the felts, I use and recommend a Silicone lubricant like this and spray it into the felt window channels all around...
http://www.toolboxsupply.com/heavy-duty-silicone-spray-lubricant-7-5-oz.html

Washing the car makes the outside scrappers and glass squeaky clean which causes excess friction between them when rolling the window down, like trying to drag a dry squeegee across a dry glass. You don't want to use silicone on these as it doesn't dry and will cause Major streaking. As normal maintenance after every car wash once the rubber and windows have dried thoroughly, dust the rubber and windows lightly with Talcum Powder and brush away the excess. The inside scrappers can also develop some friction so dust them in a similar fashion too.

I never really thought this would work until I tried it after having installed new scrapers and channels. It was very effective and made a substantial difference in how the windows rolled up and down.

Very nice looking Beetle. If the above mentioned pointers don't make the windows roll up/down easier you might need to lubricate the regulators. I had to take mine out and cleaned and lubed and they worked like new again.
Congrats and enjoy!!!

I'm suprised at how many people don't know this. I learned years ago by reading the Owner's manual. See: Door and window weatherstripsWink ...

I do like your opening statement "Was looking for an unmolested pre-1967 for about 4 months"
That is true all over. I like unmolested cars and they are getting harder to find, then someone finds one and drops it chops it and molest it.
You found a nice keeper. You window regulators may need to be lubed.

I have an original 64. I wanted an original so thats what I have. I think if someone buys an original one and wants to chop it etc they should do it. If they do a good job or a bad job it makes no difference to me. I like the lowered hot rod beetles and I like the stock ones. They should be enjoyed by who ever owns them.

nice looking '66! Driver's side front fender must be aftermarket. It also looks pushed in between the headlight and front clip/apron. Your pass side fender is correct. If you opt for a replacement front fender do look for an original.

Regarding that left front fender, judging from the angle of your pic, it "looks" like it has a more curvy and pronounced headlight nacelle, similar to how original '58-'59 front fenders look. What does it look like down near the running board? How do those areas compare to the right? More pictures from different angles or from head on might help with a positive ID.

Check out this post for some examples of how '58-'59 fenders look and compare them to your L/F...

With the fenders, I believe 63 and older have the blinkers farther forward like you have there, I'm not sure on the curvature part, that might just be the lighting and the camera angle. Regarding a 6v system, they function well if everything is properly connected and you have a good battery and generator ect. Seems like more than it is worth to change it.
66's are great, and yours looks pretty good!

Why convert it to 12v? I'd keep it 6v. If you must convert it to 12v (for a thumping stereo system or something), an easy route would be to just get yourself a hybrid starter and run the existing flywheel (see ad below).

Another fellow Texan with a '66 - looks nice!!!

sportin-wood - you make an interesting point. The engine and chassis numbers are matched. Is this a reason to consider keeping it as original as possible? My original thought to convert to 12 V is because I fear the 6 volt parts are getting harder to find.

By the way - the driver side fender does not have a different shape (must be light/camera angle in picture). It may not be correct year, but has the thick metal. I hesitate to replace it with an aftermarket fender.
