You can find out more about my flying on my Youtube chanel.
These gates are huge. Talk about surface area. I try to keep all of the gates in the same process at the same time. I could not bear the thought of having to start over on a whole new one let alone two more. Just when I think I put on the last coat there is always a low spot shows up during blocking that needs more mud. Elbows have lost their grease and skin is getting thin on my fingers. Machine blocking for shape does not work for me. I work by feel. Epoxy was to go on last week. These are still not ready. I do not put mud over primer. Gates have got to be good for Funky. There is always next years shows.
Using an X-Acto saw blade to adjust hinge to skin gap. Whacking the gates around with the five pound hammer to fit the gates to the truck changed my hinge gaps. Gaps must be maintained or cracks and rust will form as the hinges flex.

You could put MonoKote model airplane shrink wrap on it for the show then peel it off and continue after. |

I was asked about the pink Bondo over the primer. I would never do that. That is not Bondo and that is not primer. That is polyester finishing putty for use over primer with a red catalyst to make it easy to find. The "primer" is polyester surfacer applied over fresh epoxy. Two days left before I leave for the shows. I am still sanding to find low spots. Thinking about throwing a coat of sealer and one coat of SWR and do more sanding for next year. Eat sleep sand...

Your work alone on the gates pretty much solidifies my resolve to never park my DC or SC near Funky...looking like ground beef next to the Sistine Chapel... _________________ ,,Wenige Menschen denken, und doch wollen alle entscheiden.'' -der Alte Fritz

I happen to like VWs that look like ground beef. I have a few of them myself.
People not commenting here are wanting/appreciating more detailed information so here goes:
When I hammered out the dents I lost some of the original stamped detail that was in the ribs. It is a small detail but it was easy and fun to bring it back. First guide coat on everything then sand the top flat.
Guide coat that new flat.
Last part is to sand the curve up to the flat without going too far. This detail will only be a slight reflection in the new paint.
I am running out of time. I will stay up late but I will not skip a step. Eat sleep sand...
