Either the back or both sides must be fastened down or it will blow over. Having a passenger side mirror is a must. |
If you drop the side hook straps inboard of the outer tilt slats, and use the rear tie downs on the rear bow, it should not blow over then.
Turning the interior mirror so you can see out the passenger door window helps to see if there is a motorcycle or small car is beside you when tilt sides are down.
Turn passenger side mirror so you have to lean slightly to the right to see down the side will reduce the blind spot even more. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Just spent two hours last night watching your build on YouTube. Awesome stuff sir, wish I had the space and skill set to bring a VW back to life correctly as you did, and the hang gliding, yeah awesome but I couldn't begin to catch thermal pockets for nearly 200 miles!
Funky Truck doesn't look so funky, more like show room. Nicely done.
And thank you for some clarification on tips with welding, how and where on the nose, doglegs, bed. No video on front floor pan? _________________ The Bus Barn Ltd. Co.

I am still in super awe of that Gene Berg Engine he built also. The body and paint is one thing to conquer, but to also have the mechanical skills to build a classic power plant just adds the cherry on top of this one. Gates have to be coming soon.

Eric&Barb:
Great tips on eliminating blind spots and canopy tie down.
SamboSamba22:
I did not have the required skills and space either. I built the garage in my backyard out of plywood just to be able to do this. Welding I learned from Youtube on Funky. You can too. That hang gliding flight is however a life achievement. I have been trying to be good at that since I was 16.
tpinthepack:
The Berg engine is my first build. Not that hard. Lots of info here.

I can not thank you enough for documenting this project. I'm in a similar situation but but lack your skill. You make this look way to easy. Thanks again. |

You'd have many grateful folks if you started updating this thread again and documented your restoration of the gates Kurt.

I had a visit from Koll Guitars. After test driving each others trucks we spent the day talking VWs and woodworking. He drove his stock 1964 single port single cab from Washington State boarder to Southern California for music convention NAMM 2017 and back taking the slower scenic route. I helped him swap a distributor (he carried with him) and he was on his way. This has been the company's work truck for many years. Check out his website http://www.kollguitars.comThere are more photos of the VW driving in and out of the convention floor and being used as a stage.
I tried to talk him into putting his truck into the rotisserie for a little nip and tuck but he likes his truck just the way it is for now.

Wow what a treat to meet you and Funky! And actually Drive Funky! It's the only other single cab I've driven. Everything about your truck felt solid. I remember grabbing the door as I entered, it sounded great as I pulled it shut. It started perfectly and pulled hard as we climbed up the hills surrounding your house. I barely had my foot in it, there was much more in reserve. Really fun engine. Everything about the truck was so perfect.
Thanks for the hospitality and help as we sorted the tuning issues of mine.
Great to see your amazing metal and wood shops, all those buses, all those Stanley planes.
Looking forward to seeing you in Portland!
Cheers, and thanks again,

An impact drill makes using self tappers awesome. I used quite a few to hold stuff in place temporarily when doing my bus. I used them instead of clamps a lot. It allows the piece to still rotate if you need it to (which you do) then you can get two points and pinch the rest together afterwards. And you get to make sweet plug welds too. =) _________________ Brutis Patches Izabich: 1970 VW Transporter - 1776cc DP

Thanks, means a lot coming from you. I just spend most of my day reading all 73 pages of your build thread lol. I now feel like a complete hack. Awesome build. I hope one day I can do a build this detailed. Although I wont be able to keep myself to stock form, It'll have custom stuff for sure.
I have no words, or too many words, so:
