Like a familiar face. I have gotten to know the look of my truck after all these years. If I know about a detail and can see it I have to try to include it. When I see shiny new gates at a show first thing I look for are those dimples. Are they real VW or repop? If you ask me at a car show to see my dimples I will pull down my pants.

Haven't seen you since Bugorama last year, but I will make a note for next time: give kuddos for excellent attention to detail and thorough documentation; refrain from mentioning anything about dimples haha. Thanks for the great overview and for FINALLY getting those gates going haha. Cheers.

Step bit for making drain holes. I remembered to drill these before assembly so the holes can be deburred and prepped. I used an abrasive wheel in a Dremel to soften the drain holes so they will DRAIN!

Rant:
Paint will be very thin at sharp edges. It can be easily damaged and rust will form. All edges must be rounded for good paint coverage.
End rant.

Going for that steam punk look.

Test fit. I used a five pound hammer and blocks of wood to beat the gates into shape and set gaps on the truck before they get any paint.

It has its merits. Just needs clearcoat and some brass hobnails.

Awesome work and thanks for documenting it in detail. I think that this and Huetti's thread have become the reference books for single cab restos.

So much talent and attention to detail Kurt. You set the bar high!

I'm looking forward to seeing them painted, mounted on the single cab and the whole package together for the first time.

I scratched the paint badly working the gaps around the gates so I thought a respray for the upcoming show season was in order. Tired of seeing the same old stock colors.

That green bustruck would look so fresh with "Florida Look" white window rubber. I hear Johnny's Speed and Chrome is coming out with a set for single cabs.

Kurt...
When are you going to paint the gates?
I still don't know when...
17 days left to Kelley Park show.

Even the soap dish has been welded on.

The next few weeks are looking very dusty.

Hey Kurt

The gates are looking great thus far!

If you haven't already, I'd recommend using some of the eastwood internal frame coating stuff or rust encapsulator on the internal ribs before you get started on the bodywork.

It's an awful, messy job if you don't tape off all the seams, but it will add the rustproofing and future water protection you'll want to keep Funkys gates in great shape after a rain storm.

BulliBill Bowman shared his technique of this step, but he did it after paint.

I did the same to mine, based on Bill's thread, and did two coats. It made the gates a little heavier, but nothing too major. I also solved the problem of the few remaining audible rust/dust/unknown particles that would shift, whenever I opened/shut the gates. They were caught up in the Rust Encapsulator, and now it's all quiet. Whether or not you go that route, it is a option out there - a MESSY option, so do it BEFORE bodywork and paint.

Another option is to apply the internal coating just before paint and wipe up the mess as you go. This prevents crap from blowing out when you spray the paint. Always seams to be something hiding in the cavities the first time the paint gun goes by.

Internal frame coating is my middle name. I will do it after the first coat of epoxy. I don't want it between the bond of the epoxy directly to the bare steel. I let it run around and soak into the seams them wipe off all the runs.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.
As much as I like the "funky green" paint I am glad when the last of it is all washed off. Clean bare steel to start a good foundation.

Short strand waterproof polyester on each weld.

After a very noisy session with the shrinking disk on both sides of each panel I started the skim coat.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.
90% ends up on the floor.

I just realized that two days ago was the break even point if I had purchased reproduction gates. Repo gates would require all the work I would be doing from then on if not more.

15 days left.

"Oil canning" or stretched panels were a big problem. The shrinking disk alone was not enough to get some of the bad ones out. I used a propane torch and off dolly work to do some major shrinking to get flat panels. These are clips from the video that will be coming out soon. 11 days left to showtime. Not gonna make it!
