I found a steering shaft with the copper ring missing for the horn contact button. What are the options for replacing it? |

As far as I know, there is no way to replace the contact sleeve. You will most likely have to source a correct steering shaft. _________________ 1956 Ragtop |

Bummer. How does the wire connect to the brass ring? |

The wire is crimped between the Brass collar & the steering tube. There's also some cardboard to isolate it from grounding

It seems like it would be an easy part to sell. Maybe I can find something at the hardware store. |

the copper sleeve is just a smidge over 1" . Pick up a piece of 1" copper pluming pipe and you should be in good shape. _________________ Chris

Just source a new copper ring and press it on.
While you are at it, place a new wire.
I did it on mine and it worked out great |

Where did you source a new copper ring? |

A bronze bushing can work too. I just need to find a replacement for the contact holder on the column!

Maybe a PEX copper ring. You can probably rent the pex tool that compresses the copper ring (good tool is kind of expensive). It may even work on a standard copper sleeve from a piece of rigid copper pipe. Worth a shot. The pex rings are very cheap, and can be gotten from any hardware store. |

I'm in the same boat and trying to figure out what happened and how I can remedy the situation. The shaft is 24 spine and has the raised shaft behind the splines but, the copper sleeve and paper is missing as well?
Has anyone had success in retrofitting a copper band as discussed earlier?
My column cover does have the contact brush holder, (which I find odd it remained with all the other strange things done). and I do have a new contact brush.
I'm guessing this is why the PO had a horn button mounted to the dash.. _________________ Even YOU can prevent FIRES!
