It's been a while since I have posted on the Baja...
Life has been very busy between work, selling our home, moving and remodeling. There are no changes to the car since last post but I have poured lots of concrete and have been a fence building fool. I didn't get a photo but the car did look pretty cool leaving the hardware store with a load of lumber strapped to the rack.
After thing settle here at the home front I will get back to spending some time on the car. I purchased a drone so hopefully we will get some good video up soon.

Well I finally found a couple hours to work on the car. Nothing to exiting but I did get something off the procrastination list.
One complaint that I have had is that there is no place to brace your feet on the passenger side when we get into the rough stuff. So I grabbed a piece of one inch that I had bent sometime back and cut it fit between the tunnel and the chassis. It's buy no means fancy but it will get the job done!
We haven't had the car out much at all here lately but now that Dave has the Thing back on the road we will be heading out for some dessert fun and pre running. The plan is some shock tuning at the end of the month and then race the McKenzie's 250 in May. _________________ Cheers!

Hey Dusty!
That is for sure... it's a much better experience when you are able to hold yourself in place versus bouncing around like a ragdoll!
See you at the races next month! _________________ Cheers!

Well it's been awhile since I have posted...
Haven't done anything to the car other than drive and enjoy it. We are getting ready to head out to the the PCI 300 at the end of the month so everything will get a once over before we prerun.
The front of the 531 Thing did however get chopped off and rebuilt... with the exception of shocks and the steering rack, everything was replaced and the shock location was moved to the upper arm. We did a test day on Sunday and everything went very well!
Here is the link to some video we shot: https://youtu.be/HWQYlOqcPM0
I will get more up after the race. _________________ Cheers!

That’s some awesome footage! How much ground clearance does that car have, and what size arms are front and rear? It’s amazing how tuned coilovers can let the driver control the car! _________________ 4 seater Appletree buggy, road legal with 002 IRS, 3x3 Appletree kit, 6" over Dan's beam with 10" towers and Fox 2.0 shocks, '00 Subaru EJ25 with KEP stage 3 clutch and KEP adapter plate.

Alan I redid my front suspension to be like the Thing's sort of but with my home made arms I did it off the lower arms. It is working great and driving well. I'm getting it ready for another adventure so I have been testing. Taking it to Wendover for a BOR race, working a check point Oct 13 next.
The Thing looks to be working great and is going fast. Glad to hear all is well with you guys.

Thank you! I started flying drones in January and the perspective you get from the air really allows you to see what the car is doing during tuning sessions.
The car ride height is at about 15-16" with 35-40% sag. The front arms are +4 Jake's fab arm with 1 3/4" shanks and King Kong raised spindles. The frontend cycles 17" and rides buttery smooth! The other big change was the new BFG 35X10.50R15 Tires.

Ed, the car looks great! At some point our paths will cross and I'm sure there will be dust involved! The PCI 300 is going to be an awesome race... there are already 21 Class 5U cars signed up! _________________ Cheers!

1fastbigguy I was in Barstow the day before you and I think we parked in almost the same spot even! Great video and I love your cars!

Yeah that seems like a pretty popular place to test and tune. Your car looks great in the video! Not sure what you have going on the weekend of September 29th but if you want to check out an epic Class 5U race, Lucerne Valley will be the place to be! There are already 21 Five cars in class for the PCI 300... Its going to be something to see! _________________ Cheers!

Thanks! I still have some suspension tuning to do but it's driving great.
I'm going to try to make the race, my buddy is racing in the 2000 class and I'd love to see that many 5U cars _________________ 1959 Baja Bug, A-arm J30 Honda

Hello all!
The car did amazing out at Lucerne during the 2018 PCI 300. It seems like every trip the car gets that much more dialed in.
The little Ecotec 2.2 is a powerhouse! It seems like no matter how far you are into the power-band there's always a little bit more for it to give.
We did about 200 Miles of hard driving including prerunning 2 laps prior to the race, chasing the VW Thing during the race, and doing some -not so soft- testing on the final day.
My dad spent some time going through some of the footage we gathered both with his new DJI Mavic 2 and a GoPro and he edited it into a quick video. I thought you guys would enjoy!
P.S. My favorite part of the video is the drone footage at the very end. It may not look like much but those whoops felt about as deep as a stock vw bug.
