Perhaps this list could be useful for planning our Vanagon spare parts and other things we carry along. I keep some "survival" stuff in the Van in addition to some tools and a few small parts.

You’re a SEAL Stranded in Hostile Territory: What’s in Your Survival Kit?

Apparently the Seals don't carry a AAA card. Rolling Eyes

water and sleeping bag.

i also carry spare oil, ATF (for power steering), antifreeze, and jumper cables, spot light, CB radio, basic first aid kit, fire extingusher, spare belts, cap, rotor, basic tools, funnel

That is all in my van at anytime.

When i pack for a road trip, i add lots of food, more drink, and camping supplies, spare gasoline (2.5 gallon), Gun and ammo, and a spare jump start battery pack.

I like to have my leatherman on my belt. Makes me feel more secure. And afterwatching survivorman, Bear Grillis, and Dual Survival, some way to start a fire other than rubbing two sticks together.

+1 for this. As an aircraft mechanic I used my Leatherman more than my entire rollaway full of tools. Couple of jugs of fluids, a roll of duct tape, and I'm down for any road trip. ...yeah, and a lighter. Laughing

I'll learn those in a few years once I get this pack master cap to fit proper.

I've found that a folding ice ax is a remarkable tool. Smaller than a military shovel, can gut animals easily and cut down small trees. When folded it fits nicely in an 8oz pepper spray holster.

mine looks like this, just a little smaller. Perfect for when the zombies come.

The best lesson to learn from a SEAL for what to have in an emergency is what to have between your ears. Applies in the desert, an Afghan village, and by the side of the road in a Vanagon. Learn your vehicle, then go forth.

Just read the linked article. Some curious choices there but well thought out. The "broad spectrum antibiotic" was weird though - do they really need a foil package holding 32 ounces? Planning to get hurt a lot? That's a quart of ointment!

Heh..

Funny in the fact there is no MIL SPEC quoted.

This is one of those goodies that is part of the Boy Scout 10 essentials; not to forget the steel striker and the (all important) dryer lint!

To the new Cub Master, the 10 essentials and Leave No Trace can be brought in gradually to all the cubs, and your Weblos really should be exposed for sure. My Den Chief son makes sure they are shown some of this stuff....

See: http://www.google.com/#hl=en&sclient=psy-ab&am...mp;bih=805

PLEASE NOTE: The Vanagon content here, is that we all should have some of this stuff in the van at all times.....

Sleeping bag, quilt, pillows always in Winston. Books readable in my cell phone, and charging apparatus.

I always carry on me at all times my Leatherman Super Tool, a screw driving jig and bits that fit in that, and a Swiss Army knife, fairly big one. I also have a small Luxeon flashlight on my belt. All see constant use.

In Winston, I keep a set of small Vise-grips with padded jaws for emergency hose pinching, and a reflective vest. Bunch of other stuff, but those are worth mentioning.

Best!

Cool

At this point the van IS my garage, so I keep quite a bit in there, for now. For the last several years I've been cruising around quite a bit, so the van, besides everything else that I require of it, is also a mobile repair station.
The under-seat storage is FULL of critical spare parts, 4 drawer tool box behind pass seat.

Other than that, down sleeping bag, food and water, lots of good music, a couple books, first aid, beer, frisbee, beer, bocce ball set, beer, crazy creek chair(essential), beer, requisite gas can in the luggage rack for those long runs out in BFE.

The van and I will become more domesticated this year though. It'll be nice to have a garage again, but it's gonna be a challenge to give up the road. I'll just have to make sure and take her(van) camping alot, plenty of fire road cruises will help too, I hope.
