Seems like a lot more eurovan threads in the last few months. Is that because the vans are getting old and starting to fall apart? _________________ 1990 Multivan 2.1 AT |

I like it.
Good to see the different generation in various states of use/abuse.
Will be interesting to see how that generation of vehicles ages into 30 years now that the younger ones passed 20. _________________ Its a mistress; an expensive, whiney, needy bitch of a mistress. It's a crossing of the price vs. benefit curves.
As good running, nice, rust free Vanagons get harder to find Eurovans are getting much closer in price.
Eurovans in general are in better condition for the price now than many Vanagons. |

Seems to me like the next logical step as all vehicles keep getting older.
If you look into the Euro scene ( T4's) there is a huge following for them there, with many specialist vendors, clubs magazines and custom parts for these vehicle.

They were falling apart when they were new so I don't see that as the reason. Maybe now they are coming into owners with shallower pocket books looking to fix themselves. _________________ '91 Carat Westy

I think the crappy sales due to the crappiness of them compared to similar vehicles which were better and less expensive caused the pull from the US market. Replaced by the various other crapmobiles they have been churning out. I own one of the newer crap mobiles. It is a cheap POS and I treat it like one too. When it dies, the book keeper says to go buy another new crap mobile and write it off too......
The Vanagon is fun old toy to play with......much cheaper than my other collector cars and I am not afraid to drive it. When the Vanagons become impractical to keep around.....I hope I am dead then....I just do not know what I would do. I doubt I can get too excited about a Euro trash van.
So it is good there are more threads, but I can not convince upper management to create their own forum....(yet.) _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

For now I think its good to have the euros and vanagons combined, unless we get a large influx of newer VW vans I don't see the need for us to split off from them. _________________ '91 Carat Westy

I've owned four T3s and will probably continue to sing their praises, but I've had a soft spot for the T4 since it first came onto the market. I used to own one of the promotional videos produced prior to their introduction, but have long since lost it in my many residential moves. I could easily see myself shifting to a solid T4 if a diesel version became an option. I like the platform, but get a bit queasy when I think about some of the engine compartment tasks in that tight arrangement. Lately I've noticed that T4s and T3s on the road have achieved parity in my town. A change is a comin' _________________ Casey--

It only takes about 20min of work to get this kind of engine access!

I bought my first VW bus in 1968 a 1956 Deluxe micro bus with sunroof - 5 engines later and many years.
We then bought a 1974 Bay camper in 1982 that needed the engine replaced and I replaced it with a 4 cylinder Volvo B20 engine. We Put many miles touring the country in it.
We bought a 1978 sunroof 7 passenger Bay in 1988 that had some rear end damage to the taillights. Drove it for many years
I bought a 1986 Syncro in 1997 drove it until we had a flood a few years ago that soaked the engine it now waits it turn to be recycled
I just bought a 1993 Eurovan
The brakes get bigger and the horsepower goes up and a lot more bells and whistles. A whole different beast than the other years but still a VW(Audi)
we still have all the older VWs hiding in the tall trees and All the Bentley manuals on the shelf in the shop.
10 or 20 year old by the time we get them.
Eurovan was next in the line
we like them
cheers

My T4's 15 years old now with 190,000 miles on it and so far nothing's fallen off.
Guess I must have gotten hold of a good one?

The Sew Fine Interiors folks told me that they're going to start offering interior stuff for Eurovans. Apparently they've had enough inquiries to believe that there's opportunity there.
Now that the VR6 EV's are getting old and cheap (like me) they're starting to look more attractive (like me.) _________________ Joe T.

When I was shopping for mine I saw lots of 250-300k miles Eurovans out there.
So they must run sometime. Especially the way they have held their value. |

Eurovans were built in Hanover, so they're part of the family as far as I'm concerned. _________________ Joe T.

I know several folks at 250+ and they run great....not even burning significant oil.
Mine has 160k and literally runs like a new car. Burns no oil, fast, smooth and super reliable. I just met an older couple in a ferry line last summer who had 220k and had never done anything but oil changes!
The sketchy automatic trannies and tight access in the engine compartments give the critics something to cry about, but actually if you work on them and see how well they are put together it is a different story.
I have owned and wrenched a T!,T2,T3,and T4 and this EV is the best running and most trouble free one hands down. Each generation was an improvement in expected lifespan and performance.
The "soul" or "cool factor" discussion is another discussion entirely, but talk to the owners of these things and you get the straight skinny. _________________ '58 Westy camper-come and gone

I get it owning a couple of classic cars.(one is peaking out in the picture above ) But......the "uncool" perception of the T4 Transporter "Eurovan" seems to be mostly a USA thing. The rest of the world seems to love them!! |

A lot of them have gremlins.
The ones that have survived had the gremlins dealt with.
Many just will NOT pass smog in So Cali.
I got a 93 MV cheap cause it would not pass smog.
The fixes were numerous and almost were a shot gun approach, but I got it.
All little annoying things to finally make the smog Nazis happy.
I have done this now a couple of times.
A LOT of them are beat here. Not rusted but abused and a lot of work deferred......a huge turn off, plus all the cosmetic issues we see here from heat and abuse.
So many here seem really crappy once they hit the market.
Who sells a perfect van?
We do not generally have stick shift ones here and never seen a diesel.
I would love a diesel 5 speed MV...... _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!
