Hi
I started to rebuild a spare steering box in order to have a spare steering box in hand for any case that i will need one ( my bug is a daily driver )
i have remove all parts including oil seals and bearings
in addition i have the specific MATRA tool of the 5 degree backlash inspection after assembly, after not short looking in the parts stores i found a matching oil seals, but in the other hand, not with the bearings, i know that this are considered a ball thrust bearing and i have one of them with the imprint under SKF P.N but no help.
were can i get this bearings ?
or who the hell know what is the specifications of this bearing in order to get this bearings
i can't believe that they are not under production today, no way, i just refuse to accept it !!!! (TRW still manufacturing this steering box they get this bearing from someone)
see pic below
if you know any data pls help
thx
P.S - in the forum someone mentioned that usually this bearings are in good condition, but not in this case and still i believe that even under better cases there is some grinding of the outer ring by the bearing balls that contribute to the gap

I work in a large factory and I had one of our bearing distributors look for bearings for a 70 Beetle with no luck. He said the boxes built by TRW use a different bearing and the worm is machined a little differently so the new type bearing can be used. |

We’re you ever able to find a replacement bearing for this? I have the FAG 580620A bearing in mine. I have found the 580620B online but it’s 200$ and that doesn’t seem worth it. I want to keep the original box really bad though so
I may just keep looking. What year was your box out of? Mine is a 68. |

There's a long thread in the Type 3 forum about steering boxes. Might be helpful. |
